A person would normally think that protection from aging that is caused by ultraviolet
(UV) radiation would occur outside of a person's body by blocking the solar radiation. But, there is a new study that has shown that there are internal factors that are just as critical for the best protection of the skin. The study has determined that after a person eats, there are safe and readily metabolized plant extracts that help to prevent the skin from aging as a result of UV radiation. The study has also determined that this slows the absorption of the harmful UV radiation that is generated by the sun's rays. There is little doubt that UV radiation causes damage to a person's health and appearance. Despite the numerous warnings, as many as over 2 million people in the United States alone will be diagnosed with cancer of the skin cancer in any particular year. The most dangerous type of cancer of the skin, melanoma, has rates that have doubled in past 20 years and continue to increase at 7 percent each year. There is a study that has shown that plant extracts had a 54 percent reduction in activity of collagen degrading enzymes and an 86 percent inhibition of enzymes that help to breakdown the skin's natural moisturizers. For many years, natives of Honduras have protected themselves from sunburn, tumors, and psoriasis by ingesting an extract from a particular fern. The first studies were on its effects were published more than 40 years ago and since then studies have determined that the extract is rich in antioxidants which help the defenses of the skin from the damaging UV radiation. Researchers from Harvard University studied this fern extract on 9 volunteers who were healthy to try to determine if it would protect fair and light skinned people from damage by the sun. All of the volunteers were provided with extract of the fern and then exposed to numerous doses of artificial solar radiation. After 24 hours, biopsy samples were taken from the volunteers to determine how much skin redness that was there due to inflammation. The results showed that those volunteers who took the extract of the fern had less damage due to UV radiation and significantly less sunburn cells, which are indicators of tissue damage as a result of light. The extract of the fern stopped the infiltration of mast cells, which release chemicals into the body that cause inflammation, redness, and itching. In addition, the extract of the fern extract protected the main immune cells that fight cancer which are located in skin's outer layer.
