The largest town found on the island is Kingscote. It was first called Reeves Point when it was established in 1836 as a settlement for Europeans. It was renamed Kingscote when it was proposed that it served as South Australia's capital. This never transpired because the island's limited resources would not have been able to sustain a large population.

Agriculture is among the major sources of the island's economy. This includes grain, canola and potato farming, and sheep grazing. Cattle that are farmed in heavy rainfall areas produce meat that is known throughout Australia for its high quality. Interact with Australia's native wildlife on Kangaroo Island
