Insurance Coverage for Pregnancy

If you are already carrying a child and need health care insurance

, you will probably find that it won't be easy to find. Health care insurance carriers know that they are unlikely to earn a profit on you and are unlikely to offer you maternity insurance.

Therefore, your choices are likely to be limited, but there are likely to be some ways that you can lower your bills. In some situations, medical insurance carriers are mandated to insure you.

You may qualify for group medical insurance. You could qualify for a government-sponsored policy through your city, county, your state or the federal government. You may be able to get the cost of your pregnancy lowered through negotiation.

You will probably not be able to be approved for an individual health insurance policy, if you applied while pregnant. However, if you currently have a health insurance policy, you will not be dropped from the medical insurance plan because you are carrying a child unless you applied too recently.

Many medical individual policies will eliminate coverage for pregnancy. If you have one of these health care insurance policies and are expecting keeping may still be worthwhile.

Why? Because most of these plans will cover the complications of pregnancy. Complications may considered an illness. Normal childbirth is not.

You may want to look at other options if your current plan doesn't cover normal pregnancy expenses. If you do, make sure that you keep your current contract until you have another plan in place. This can really lower your costs.

Group medical insurance, if available to you, will probably be your best alternative. These types of plans usually have good benefits and will often have good doctors and hospitals.

Employer-sponsored medical insurance could be available to you through your employer. If your child is due is after the employer's next open enrollment period, you might be able to get the bulk of your maternity costs covered by that policy. Getting group health care insurance is often the best alternative.

If your spouse or domestic partner qualifies for employer-sponsored medical insurance, you may be able to get health insurance through his or her plan. You will probably need to wait until the next open enrollment period to get insured.

Open enrollment periods usually happen once per year, but there are special open enrollment periods also. You can probably be placed on your spouse's insurance if you apply right after you get married. A child can usually qualify to get on a parent's plan if he or she applies before he or she is 30 days old.

Employer-sponsored insurance is often available to the self-employed. In many areas, an individual can qualify for group insurance. You might be able to get coverage this way as the primary insured or as a dependent.

There could be plans offered through your state, town or county. You may qualify for Medicaid. These government-sponsored plans should be investigated if coverage through private health insurance isn't available to you.

You might want to speak with your OB/GYN or your local planned parenthood to see what choices are available in your area. Alternatives available in different states, towns and counties vary widely. It is in your best interest to check out all your choices.

You could be able to lower your maternity bills by prepaying your hospital bill. Soon-to-be-mothers often find that the hospital will give them a deep discount if they are able pre pay the bill.

Shopping around for a less costly obstetrician and hospital can also be a good idea. Hospitals in the same town can charge very different prices. It pays to comparison shop.

Pregnancy shouldn't be a time where money is paramount in your mind. However, trying to reduce your expenses can make motherhood an easier journey.
