Instructing Children To Value Finances

Instructing Children To Value Finances

Overspending is a major problem among society today

. As a result people are riddled with loads of debt unable to get their heads above water. Unfortunately children learn by example from watching their parents how to fall into this familiar trap. However, there are things that parents can do to help their children not develop these bad habits. One of the first things to do is teach a child to respect money. Here are some ways to do that.

Familiarize Them with the Cost of Items They Want

This is one of the best ways to teach your children to value every penny. Take them to the stores on weekends or whenever you find time. Make them familiar with the price of different items that they want to purchase.

Also make them understand how they can help parents save money by deciding their wants and needs carefully. This may not go over too well initially since children have a I want it now attitude, however, over time they will begin to understand what you are teaching them. This is important to help them value money and use it wisely. Instructing Children To Value Finances

Teach Costs of Everyday Items

When you want to make them understand the value of money, only discussing the price of items that they want is not enough. You should also make them familiar with the value of products that we need to live on a daily basis. This will help them to get an idea of the relative cost of things.

Once they see that the new video game that they want can almost equal the cost of a good amount of groceries for the week then they will be less likely to ask for those things on a continual basis. Even if they do ask they will understand why you may say no.

Teach Them About Saving

You should teach your child the habit of saving money. Put money away in their piggy bank or savings account if they have one established. Whenever they want something let them spend their own money. As they begin to see their money go away they will be more hesitant to spend.

It is easy to spend Mommys or Daddys money, but when it comes to spending their own money that is a different story. As you begin to establish the habit of saving this will be instilled in them and they will have a harder time spending their money frivolously when they get older.

Encourage Your Child to Save Money

Motivate your children to save money. You can start this by introducing a nicely designed piggy bank. You can go for the musical piggy banks to help a child become interested in saving money. If your children do not want to save money, you can set a goal for them and once they reach the saving goal, you can reward them by offering them something that they will like to have.

As your child grows, you can introduce a college investment plan for them to support their education. For grown up children, after school jobs can also be a good way of earning money and teaching them to value it.
