India's Festivals

India is a land which holds maximum number of cultures in the world

. Everyday a festival is ongoing in some part of the country. There are numerous Indian festivals which help in binding this diversified country together and develop a spirit of brotherhood among people. One can say that in every month we have a week of festivals. Indian Festivals are related to various Gods and Deities of different religions and cultures. Religions in India can broadly be classified in four types Hinduism, Islam, Christianity and Sikhism. Bright colors, lights and illuminations, dance, sweets and enthusiasm are the characteristic of Indian festivals.Fairs are also an integral part of Indian festivals.

Some of the festivals of India are mentioned below-

Diwali - It's a festival of lights, illumination, sweets, new clothes and can be called as a synonym with celebration. It is the biggest Indian Festival. It is celebrated on the eve of winning of truth and nobility over demon and sin. This day people worship Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi, who is goddess of wealth and prosperity.

Holi - Festival of colors. It is a celebration which marks the arrival of spring which is a a season of new hopes and new beginnings. Holi is a day to celebrate with friends and neighbors. Farmers use to give offer the grains which are harvested. Its origin is from Mathura in, U.P., when lord Krishna killed of demon "madhu".India's Festivals


Akshey Tritya - Baisakh Shukl Tritya, it is believed that this day marked the commencement of both sat yug and Treta Yuga. This day people use to worship lord Vishnu, donate fan, rice, salt, ghee, sugar, vegetables, tamarind, fruit, clothes etc in charity, buy gold and enjoy holy dip in Ganga.

Bhhaya Dooj - This is a festival to enrich love between brother and sister. This day, the sisters worship berry tree and wish for the longevity of their brother. Some people in U.P. worship Lord Chitragupta, who is considered as the God who maintains record of birth and death.

Naga Panchami - India is a country where not only gods but animals are also worshiped. Naga panchami is a festival when whole country worships Snakes. It is celebrated on 5th day of the light half of the Sravan (July-August). Whole country offers milk to snakes.

Ram Navami this Indian festival is celebrated as the birth day of Lord Rama. It celebrated on the 9th day of chaitra month in hindu calendar. This is a 9 day festival when devotees of lord Rama fast and worship. This day is also known as when Sanskrit poet Tulsidas started composing Ramcharit manas.India's Festivals


Vijay Dashmi (Dussehara) Dussehara is another very prominent Indian Festival which is celebrated for the victory of Lord Rama over the Demon Ravana. It is also celebrated because Durga Mata killed the demon Mahishasur. This is a ten day festival which starts with the beginning of month Ashvin and the tenth day the month is celebrated as Vijaya Dashmi.
