India Travels: An Overview

India has been attracting eyes of zealous travelers for centuries

. A huge country, with countless ancient monuments, rich culture, traditions and ethnic variety of people. Enormous cultural diversity of India allows any traveler to find an interesting city, landscape or site.

India and each of its states are attractive to tourists with a variety of recreational purposes. Those, who are interested in spiritual and material sides of this great and unique civilization, and those, who like to feel the rhythms of life in the subtropics and in a densely populated country, will find it interesting to go there. Those, who live in the world of reality, and those, who are attracted by the Indian doctrine of eternal rebirth of the soul and Nirvana, come to India to find it a comfortable place to establish connections with other cultures and points of view. Those, interested in the great monuments of the past, and those, who are concerned about the fate of the world and the possibility of solving complex problems of today, have much to think of once they step on the Indian land.

India's major cities are Delhi, Bombay, Calcutta and Madras. Each of these tourist centers are wonderful destinations visited by tourists from around the world. The symbol of the country is Taj Mahal, a white Marble mausoleum located in Agra.

Delhi is the metropolitan area and one of the oldest cities in South Asia. It is situated on the right bank of the Yamuna river and is divided, according to the tradition, into Old Delhi and New Delhi. Building of New Delhi began in 1911, since the transfer of the capital of British India from Calcutta. Here are concentrated the government offices, residences of senior government officials, business people, embassies, offices, and ultra-luxury hotels. New Delhi is well planned. Here, one can see the Presidential Palace and the Houses of Indian Parliament framed by 144 columns. The center of Old Delhi is the medieval fortress of the 17th century Lal Kila (the 'Red Fort'). Its massive walls, ornate gates, graceful pavilions and palace halls with unique stone carvings make it a paradise on earth, right as it is said in one of the inscriptions on the wall of the fortress. Outside the gates of the fortress, there are narrow streets, filled with an endless crowd, among them the famous Chandni Chowk.India Travels: An Overview

Calcutta is the largest city in India, located in the delta of the Ganges. On the bank of the river, there is the Maidan, a huge park, where holidays are traditionally held. It adjoins the blocks of office buildings and skyscrapers. In Calcutta, the country's only underground operates. Mumbai (Bombay) is the western gate of India, inhabited by 12 million of inhabitants, which lies on the island. This is the country's main port and the center of textile, chemical, petrochemical and pharmaceutical industries. The southern side of the city is marked by modern architecture and high-rise buildings. It is called the Indian Manhattan. Mumbai is the Indian film production center.

Bangalore is the chief research centre. In addition to the institutes, constructing and design bureaus, many of which are preoccupied with the development of the space program, one will find here the National Aeronautics Laboratory and the Institute of Sciences.

However, the capital and other major cities are full of contrasts, since there are entire blocks of slums, which often begin at the foot of skyscrapers. The slums are the shelter for displaced people from the surrounding villages. Many of them are deprived of their regular work and simple amenities. International tours usually start in Delhi and Agra and head to Jaipur. Recently there has been added a new route to Khajuraho. About 20 churches have been preserved here, and the largest of them is the temple of Mahadeo Kandarya, built more than 1000 years ago. The temple complex at Khajuraho is a national asset and is included by the United Nations in the Catalogue of monuments of world culture.
