India: Safe for Tourists?

India: Safe for Tourists?

With the shooting of two Taiwanese tourists outside the Jama Masjid mosque in Delhi and a bomb in a car that exploded nearby on Sept.19th

, and with the Commonwealth Games just two weeks away, people are beginning to ask the question: Is India safe for tourists? The US, Britain and Australia have issued travel warnings, but Kumari Selja, India's Tourism Minister says that the country is safe and called for visitors "not to panic by such stray incidents".

There are, however, what seem to be legitimate concerns as there have been threats from an extremist group that has sent emails warning of attacks coinciding with the upcoming Games. E-mails sent to the media from a group claiming to be the Indian Mujahideen, a militant organization with Pakistani ties, threatened that the group is "making preparations" for the event and said "We are warning you".

Australia has issued an advisory as its cricket team meets with India in Delhi for a cricket series. The advisory said ""Australians in New Delhi should be aware that the Commonwealth Games will be held in a security environment where there is a high risk of terrorism"". Security measures have been reinforced even more as an army of police is already in place for the Commonwealth Games, which will begin on October 3rd.

The general consensus is that there is some cause for concern and heightened awareness but most countries are not actually suggesting that tourists avoid India altogether, and that the attack at the mosque was likely an isolated incident. Indian officials are stressing that security will be more than adequate for the Games, and most observers are likely to agree. There may be isolated incidents but on the whole, India is still a relatively safe country to visit. Aside from the tensions in Delhi surrounding the Games and the troubles in the disputed Kashmir region, India is not normally a dangerous place to visit.India: Safe for Tourists?

For those visiting the subcontinent, take advantage of cheap calls to stay in touch with the folks back home. They'll want to hear about your adventures and to know that you're having a safe and fun trip. The people that call India home will welcome you with open hearts, and most likely you will be treated to the hospitality and warmth the Indian people are known for.
