Improve Your Smile: Cosmetic Dentistry

Traditional dentistry has as its object the necessary prevention and treatment of

oral disease; cosmetic dentistry, on the other hand, is more concerned with electively improving the appearance of the mouth, teeth, and smile. There are several treatments that cosmetic dentists currently use to improve the aesthetics of a person's teeth. These include whitening, veneers, inlays and onlays, composite bonding, implants, smile makeovers, and full mouth reconstruction.

Teeth whitening is arguably the most common--and simplest--cosmetic treatment available. In order to easily improve a person's smile, dentists bleach the client's teeth to remove or hide stains from foods, drinks (especially red wine, coffee, and tea), smoking, and/or poor oral hygiene. Dental veneers are also recommended for stained teeth, but only in the event that whitening was not successful. Veneers are porcelain or composite laminates that are bonded to a tooth in order to cover discoloration, gaps, chips, and/or cracks. Inlays and onlays--sometimes called indirect fillings--are also made from porcelain or composites and are very similar to veneers. Created in a lab beforehand, the inlays and onlays are then bonded onto teeth that have structural problems. (True fillings, on the other hand, are molded during the time of the dental visit.)

Composite bonding is another method of treatment. A composite material, resembling enamel, is placed on the surface of the tooth or in the cavity and then sculpted to the tooth's exact shape. The material is hardened under an intense light. This restorative method repairs broken, decayed, discolored, and/or chipped teeth and blends unnoticeably into the smile. Dental implants require a more extreme operation: prosthetic roots are used to replace missing teeth. While all of these treatments improve smiles, this particular one can also make a person look younger, since a loss of teeth ages a person's face.

If a person's mouth and/or teeth have more severe problems, a smile makeover or full mouth reconstruction may be desired. Smile makeovers are performed after a thorough assessment of the mouth's aesthetics. This process usually includes several of the procedures listed above, along with gingival sculpting, to realize the look the patient wants. Full reconstruction goes a step further, correcting functionality issues with the bone and muscle structure in the mouth and jaw. This is obviously a more time-consuming and costly option, one that should only be undertaken in the most extreme circumstances and with a reliable dentist.

No matter the severity of the problem, there are a variety of options available to anyone discontented with his or her smile.
