An empty mind is the devils workshop. This famous proverb is powerful enough to explain the consequences of an idle mind. Magazines and research papers time and again bring forth the afflictions that children in most countries get affected with, drugs, alcohol, Internet abuse and teen pregnancy. What they fail to include is Idleness. If we try to trace the roots of all the problems that children and teenagers go through, chances are that boredom would come out as the most common factor. Many social networking websites cash in on this trait of children. When children have nothing to do, they tend to fall prey to Internet Marketing gimmicks associated with social networking, chatting and similar departments. A few years back, the scenario was like this. Teens would come back from school and go to their part-time jobs. Else, they would complete their homework. All these things would keep them occupied. There used to be a fixed routine. And it was beneficial for the teenagers. Todays world is a little different. Single-parent households or families where both the parents work do not require kids to take after-school jobs. Availability of housekeepers makes things all the more worse. Television, though hosts a number of educational shows (read National Geographic, Discovery, History etc.), not many parents can claim that their kids prefer these over entertaining shows of different genres. Internet, yet again, is a sea of information. But it finds its use among teenagers more for social networking and watching adult content in comparison to Wikipedia or educational blogs. Boredom is the root of all evil. If children would not have work to do after school, they would waste their time indulging in activities like online chatting, watching useless TV serials, playing video games and chatting via SMS. Is there a solution to getting rid of idleness? After-school programs and part-time jobs can keep your child occupied. Parents can pay attention to the activities that their kids like. Giving a lot of pocket money to kids is also a major cause for teenage-related issues. Community centers in most localities have various programs for children of different age-groups. Kids should learn to do household chores themselves; too much dependence on the housekeeper would spoil your child. Parents should participate in their childs activities. This way, kids would not be able to waste time. Intern and TV are excellent sources of entertainment and information. However, parents should keep an eye on the type of content their kids are watching and reading. Helping your kid with homework is a constructive way of keeping him/her occupied.
