Hunting Pheasant With a Dog

Hunting Pheasant With a Dog

The fall season will be upon us very soon and the leaves changing colors give us

a splendid panoramic view, reaching for our cameras to capture the uninterrupted moment of fall colors. There will be plenty of events wherever there is colorama. People will be apple picking, pumpkin picking, and hayrides for the kids and many other outdoor activities such as taking a nice scenic drive to your special spot to view the fall landscape.

My special spot is the hunt club to hunt that evasive upland bird called the pheasant. As soon as we arrive at the club, my German shorthair pointer is squirming in his kennel in the back of my SUV as to say let me out of here so I can find some birds. After signing in inside the clubhouse, we are given our hunting location to hunt birds. It is not an easy task to hunt pheasant without a dog. Half of the fun in hunting upland game birds is watching your dog work. Without a dog, chances are the only thing you will get is some exercise and turn up empty handed. You may get lucky and kick up a bird but it may get up too far away for you to get a good enough shot.

One important item to bring out into the field is a couple of bottles of water, one for you and one for your dog. Dogs get thirsty fast, especially in warm weather running up and down corn rows. Always try to hunt upwind so your dog has the advantage of his keen sense of smell. Once your dog is on point, it is best for you to walk around him slowly and as quietly as possible to locate the bird. If your dog has been trained properly, he will hold his point until you give the command for him to flush the bird. Many times you will be able to get a glimpse of the bird before he takes flight. If not, give your dog the command to flush the bird. Pheasants will try to conceal themselves in thick cover to give them the advantage.

When the bird is flushed and takes flight, don't shoot too quickly because you want to be able to clean the bird when you get home, not when it's shot. Lol. When the bird is downed, your dog will retrieve it and bring it to you. If he is trained properly, the dog should not chew the bird. He should have a soft mouth bringing it to you. There are instances where the bird will be a runner, refusing to take flight. In this instance, let your dog do the work and see if the dog reverses the pheasant to come back in your direction. The bird may elude the dog and take flight far from you, not giving you the proper shot.Hunting Pheasant With a Dog

As you can see, hunting pheasant with a dog definitely has its advantages. If you do not have your own dog, the hunt club where you have a membership, usually has a dog or dogs that you can rent with their handler. In this scenario, the handler is responsible to give the dog commands and carry your game until you are finished hunting. For an extra fee, he may clean your birds for you.

You have now come to an understanding of hunting with a dog is without a doubt the best way to hunt pheasant. You got some good walking exercise, smelled the fresh scent of changing leaves and watched man's best friend find the birds for you. You can't ask for anything more.
