How to measure your bed to buy bedding

Who hasn't stared blankly at the shelves in the bedding departments wondering what all the sizes mean and which one fits their bed. How can we safely navigate this minefield and buy the right sized bedding without losing our minds and having to take to our unmade beds?

If the phrase to go to the mattresses means to prepare to go to war then that is exactly what we should do by arming ourselves with the correct measurements.

In order to have a fighting chance of getting it right we only need three sets of measurements, the mattress, the duvet and the pillows. Measure each from side to side and from top to tail. The mattress measurement will tell you your bed size 90cm being a UK Single, 135cm a Double, 150cm a King Size, 180cm is a Super King and 200cm a Large Super King. This measurement is the size of the fitted sheet although a few centimetres too large is better than too small especially if you use mattress protectors or toppers. It is also the bed size when choosing the flat sheet, Double flat sheet for a Double bed.

The duvet measurement is for duvet covers. A fraction too large here won't make much difference either but too small and the duvet will bunch inside the cover. Some people prefer the over stuffed' look and use the next duvet size up i.e. King Size on a Double bed. Depending on how you make your bed, choose the flat sheet carefully so that one doesn't overhang the other too much.

Finally, the pillows. A UK pillow is around 48x75cm but Spanish sizes vary so consider having an alternative set of pillows, UK and Spanish. This can ease the disappointment of finding bedding you like only to discover that it's not available in your pillow sizes and it's not too much trouble to swap them over when you change the bedding. Our tip would be to try to get the same type for both sets so that you don't notice the difference.

It really is that simple, measure carefully, know your sizes and next time you go out to wage war against the world of conflicting bedding sizes you are bound to come back with exactly what you went for.

Here at www.home-mallorca.eu , we understand these problems and carry a large range of qualities and sizes for homes, hotels and yachts and also offer a bespoke bedding service.

Good luck and sleep well.
