How to find female models for erotic photography: Top 10 ways

1. Ask your girlfriend or another female friend. Who better to inspire you than someone you know. Here you already have a good relationship and she maybe interested in modelling for you. As for erotic photography, make sure she knows where the intended photos will be seen (eg: website, exhibition, erotic magazine etc) as you don't want to embarrass her. And always make sure you have a signed model release for each shoot. The latter may seem silly but firstly; models should have signed a model release and secondly, should the relationship go awry, would you want to lose access to probably some of your best work?

2. Hire the model through a photo agency. Probably this is the most obvious route. Every agency will have a varied range of models on their books for you to choose from. This method will cost you more than most options as you are booking for a professional model but on the plus side, she will bring experience to the shoot. This is essential if you have not photographed a model before, and she may also bring out some inspired images from you. Naturally the cost factor may affect your decision to go this way.

3. Amateur photo clubs usually have a roster of models. Most general photo clubs usually have a glamour night at somepoint and on these nights, experienced and fresh new models will be posing for you in front of the camera. Go along to one of the group nights firstly as a practice run on taking part in a studio shoot (note: you must remember if you want great shots, then you should book the model for a'1-2-1' shoot later, which you will be able to direct). Secondly group nights are very good to see if you have a rapport with the model you have come along to see, as there is no point booking someone you can't speak to.

4. Some studios have their own book of models. This is similar to agencies as some studios have broadened their potential usage. The main difference is that studios don't take a percentage of the model's fee, but it will expect you to use their studio facilities.

5. Approach the woman personally in the street or socially e.g. at a bar. This method requires the most care and attention. When you approach someone; be open, gentle and smile. It's best to talk about photography generally at first before asking them if they'll pose for you in the nude. Talk about the type of photos you create and naturally you must be able to gauge their interest in the topic. And don't expect to be successful each time, but persistence does pay off. Always be polite and professional.

As an example, I met a like minded soul at an erotic photography exhibition. I was able to talk to someone who had wished to pose for nude modelling but had been too shy to follow up on her dream. We later worked together for three times and between us, we had created some very successful photographs.

6. By word of mouth. Some models will recommend you to model friends if they think you'll be ideal for them. This method is certainly very flattering to the photographer. So always have a good rapport with the models you photograph (and if you have promised a CD of photos to them, don't forget to send them).

7. Website promotion. Having your own website is today's portfolio of work and it's possible for models to find you online. Also it's a good idea to create a Models Wanted' page, which details all possible questions that a potential model may have.

8. Internet search for local models. The internet is full of models looking for work, so with the aid of a local search and some email chatter, you'll be able to find what you're looking for. Also it might not be easy to

9. Ask a photographer friend. They may know several models that you will find interesting.

10. Advertise at a local gallery or coffee shop. Some places have a notice board and these are likely places to find a potential model, and it's more discrete than a shop window!

To summarise, whether you are looking for a professional model, an amateur model or the girl next door' to pose for your erotic photography, one or all of the above methods will help you locate the consenting woman you require. Happy shooting!
