When a child behaves in a nice way the credit goes to the parents. Similarly when a child behaves rudely the responsibility lies with the parents only. As a parent you play the most important role in the upbringing of your child. Just as you teach your child how to eat, how to sleep, how to read or how to sing; it is your responsibility to teach your child manners. It is probably the toughest job because whatever you teach your child you need to follow yourself. If your child sees that you say something else and practice something else, he or she will never listen to you. Even if your child follows your instructions in front of you, he or she will develop a tendency to break the rule when you are not there. So be very careful while teaching manners to your children.
Here are a few steps that you can follow in order to teach your child manners successfully.
Children get inspired by seeing examples. So set a good example for your child and who else it can be than your child's mom or dad and that is you. You can talk about legends but they are not alive and your child can not see them. So practice what you preach. This will inspire your child to walk on the same path as yours.
You need to teach your child manners in stages. Don't try to teach too much at a time. Just think, will it be useful to teach a one year old child to stop chewing? Your baby's comprehension and skills develop over time. So make sure your child understand what you are saying. Only then he or she can learn it. When a child is grown up enough to understand the reason behind a rule it is the best time for teaching children manners.
Teach your children the proper use of words like "sorry", "thank you", "please", "excuse me", "may I" etc. Encourage your child to say these words whenever and wherever applicable. Again remember, you should do the same thing so that your child understands the importance of these curtsies.
Be very careful about the language you use with your children. If you use slang or abusive language in front of your children, they will not only learn it but use it with others.
Teach your child that while addressing adults they should use a certain degree of formality. For example they should call your colleagues like Mr. Johnson, Miss Julie etc., until the adults ask your child to call them otherwise like aunty or uncle.
Ask your children not only to respect elders but also his or her friends or kids who are younger to your child. Simultaneously you should try to inculcate a sense of self respect in your child.
Teach your child etiquette like shaking hands, behave quietly in public spaces, offer foods to others before eating, not to interrupt while someone else is talking and so on.
Address if a rule is broken by your children and tell them that you don't want them to repeat this behavior.
If your child behaves in the right manner, don't forget to appreciate it.
