How to Survive in Bear Country

There seems to be a lot of information out there about how to survive a bear attack. But wouldn't it be nice to know how to avoid the attack altogether? The best way to survive a bear attack is to avoid encountering a bear. Bear encounters can be drastically reduced or completely eliminated by following these simple steps.

Make noise. This cannot be stressed enough. If given a choice, the bear will choose to avoid you. Maintain a constant conversation with your hiking partner. Do not stop talking. If you are alone sing or talk to yourself. You may feel silly talking to yourself or singing loudly in the middle of the woods but considering the alternative, wouldn't you rather survive?

Some people wear bells on their shoes. I personally do not think this is loud enough to carry over the ridge you are climbing or around the next bend but if you feel lucky you may try it. There has been some research that shows cow bells may actually attract bears because they are beginning to associate them with cows. Grizzly bears eat cows. Please do not wear a cow bell.

Do not bring food into the woods unless it is vacuum sealed. Bears have an amazing sense of smell. That roast beef sandwich you want to bring for a picnic lunch can attract bears from a mighty long distance. There are many varieties of sealed camp food and MRE's available on the market. These are a much safer alternative.

f the worst things you can do is to have a cookout at your campsite. The smell can carry for miles. This will attract any bears that are nearby. The odor of the food permeates your clothing. You now smell like food. If you must have a cookout, do not do it at your tent. Change your clothes before retiring. You would never catch me going to sleep in bear country smelling like food with nothing but a tent to protect me.

Survival in bear country depends on you. A surprised bear is a very dangerous bear. If you give them a chance, they will usually be more than happy to get out of your way if you just let them know that you are coming. So don't entice the bears with food odors. Wear clean clothes while hiking. And don't be embarrassed to make some noise.
