How to Relax In a Crowd

Have no fear! Feeling somewhat tense in a crowd is perfectly natural and perfectly manageable. Working as a communication coach, I've seen many methods to relax in a crowd put into practice. Here are 4 of the ones I've discovered to work best:

1. Breathe! When you get tense, your respiration gets shallower and less regulated, which only reinforces the tension you feel. The way out is to consciously focus on your breathing and change its patterns. Breathe deeper and slower, take deeper breaths and slowly make your breathing more regulated. As you do this, you will quickly begin to notice yourself relaxing.

2. Realize people are not judging you. It often happens for us to become somewhat paranoid in a crowd, and to think that all the people around us are carefully observing us, scrutinizing our every move and every word. Catch yourself when you tend to think like this and remind yourself that you're exaggerating. Most people are too preoccupied with their own person to take the time to observe and judge you.

3. Realize you have nothing to hide. Even if some people are paying attention to you, or you're saying something in a group and people are paying attention to you, there is still nothing to really worry about; because you have nothing to hide. You may think that you make certain mistakes and have certain flaws that are embarrassing, but you are probably just dramatizing. Always keep this in mind when in a crowd.

4. Focus on something else. Feeling nervous is the result of negative, pessimistic thinking. As this kind of thinking has little value in a crowd, one of the best things you can do in a crowd is to not focus on it. Instead, focus on action, on doing whatever it is that want to do in the particular situation you're in. As you do so, you will get out of your head and get more relaxed.

The more you are able to relax in a crowd, the more you can think straight, act straight and enjoy the experience. There are many situations which require you to be in a crowd, and handling them well provides countless benefits.
