How to Protect Your Kids From Dangerous Blogging

Author: Karthick R

Blogging (short for creating a "web log" or online personal record) is now widespread. It is popular especially among teenagers, who sometimes create blogs without their parents or guardians knowing something.

According to recent studies, about half of all blogs created by teenagers, to specify, two out of three youngsters give their age and three out of five residents their contact information. One in five gives his real name. It goes without saying that sharing such detailed personal information is associated with potential risks.

Another problem is that with the increasing popularity of blogging among them, the possibility to compete for attention with each other increases. Occasionally, this can cause children to represent inappropriate content, such as provocative pictures of themselves and friends on the Internet. How to Protect Your Kids From Dangerous Blogging

A brief blogging guide for parents

Even if a blog can be quite beneficial (for example, with improved writing and communication) skills, it is important that you educate your children in advance of the Internet and blogging. Think of it as a kind of driving school before making your children alone on the road. Here are some suggestions to get you started:

Set jointly with your children the rules for the use of Internet, and watch carefully that these rules are followed. Check the content you allow your child to put on the internet. Seemingly, innocuous information for example, a club mascot or a photo of the city combined to give information on the whereabouts of the blog author. Ask yourself (and ask your children the same thing), if they find it all right to show the contents of a stranger. When in doubt, remove the content in question. Evaluate the blogging service, and check to see if they offer personal, password-protected blogs. Save the Internet address of the blog of your child, and check it regularly. Call on other blogs to collect positive examples to learn from your children. From Top to Bottom

Basic guidelines for blogging

The following notes provide a useful starting point for children who are interested in blogging. This list is not complete. We encourage parents to add additional guidelines to meet the specific needs within the family. Start by giving your children the following instructions:

Never provide personal information, such as last names, contact information, addresses, phone numbers, names of schools, e-mail addresses, and last names of friends or relatives, instant messaging names, ages or birth dates. Never post provocative pictures on the Internet, either of themselves or of other persons. The children should make sure that they put on the internet pictures that do not contain any of the above information. Remind your children, but always double check the background of an image. Assume that the published content is permanently accessible to third parties. Any Internet user can easily print or save it to your blog on a computer. Websites of blogging providers with clear terms and use to verify that the actual blogs, not just the user accounts are protected by passwords. (Even if this is the case, it is better to assume that every Internet user can access the published content on the blog.) Avoid competition with users connected to blogging. Post only positive comments and never use blogs to attack or insult others. About the Author:
