How to Pick Perfect Presents for Kids

If you have a special relationship with a child, whether it's your own child, a niece or nephew, or a friend's child, you want to find a "just right gift" one that won't be tossed aside when it's time to open the next gift.

You want to give something that will enrich the child's life in some way. You want to find the perfect blend of education and entertainment. And you want it to be special.

Because you have a special relationship, you probably know quite a bit about the child, so the first thing you'll want to do is to make a list of everything you know about the child's hobbies and special interests. What toys or games does the child already have that she loves? What were some of her favorite gifts of past holidays and birthdays? How to Pick Perfect Presents for Kids

Now take one of those interests or hobbies and go in a slightly new direction. If the child loves dressing her Barbies, purchase a fashion design kit. If the child loves Star Wars, find a kit that will help him build a robot or a model rocket. If the child loves taking care of Webkinz, see if there are some low-maintenance pets that you might be able to give, such as a goldfish or an African Dwarf frog. (Of course, you'll want to make sure to ask the child's mom or dad before buying something that will take a future commitment from them.)

If you live near the child, give toys that will allow you some quality time with him. Buy a Lego or Erector set that you two can work on together. Or, say you know how to yo-yo. Purchase a couple of yo-yos for the child. Then take the time to teach the child how to yo-yo, as well as how to perform a few tricks. Or, say you enjoy chess. Purchase a good chess set for her and then make a time commitment to teach the child the game.

Keep in mind, too, that memories are priceless. You can always treat the child to a special event and purchase a small souvenir as a keepsake, in lieu of a larger gift.

If you feel out of touch with the child's interests, treat the child to an afternoon with you, where you can visit a bookstore or a toy store together and the child can pick out something special after you have reconnected.

If you can find a good toy store, the salespeople can usually give some wonderful recommendations for items that have been popular with other kids of that age.

The internet has made it possible to find a huge variety of toys and games that are both entertaining and educational.
