A buy-in' is when employees are willing to change their work practices and company policies without a fuss. Without buy-in, employees will either passively resist changes or change back to what they were doing when the change is officially over.
Creating buy-in to changing business practices allows changes to be made without passive or active resistance. These changes can range from moving office equipment to reduce travel time between work stations, moving industrial equipment in an office to reduce noise, moving offices of staff to put work groups together, and changing process work-flows.
Group employees not just by work function but by process flow. For example, putting all the engineers in one area may improve their communication, but moving offices of configuration managers to a nearby area will also help both groups communicate. Follow through on employee complaints. Companies unwilling to address worker concerns or complaints will see communication lines shut down and future resistance to new changes. Asking for advice and then failing to implement it or at least say why it will not be done results in employees ceasing to give ideas.
