How to Choose the Right Math Tutor for Your Child!
As I sure you are aware, your schools are doing everything they can to savemoney these days, inclluding laying off teachers and other essential staff. Therefore, when your child needs real help, they are not likely to get it from their local school. Turning to a tutor may be your best choice.
If you need to choose a tutor to help your child, I would consider the following factors before you choose.
The Teacher/Tutors:
1. Educational Background
The tutor or teacher you choose should have a strong working knowledge of mathematics. If you choose a teacher, they should be certified and have have taught the subject area. Should you choose a college student, make sure they are competent in the subject areal and lastly. Finally, you can choose a peer tutor from their class. You should choose the tutor type with the experience you need. Only you can make the decision that is right for you.
2. Training or Past Experience
When choosing a tutor, make sure you are comfortable with them and they teach, listen and communicate effectively with your child. The more training or experience they have the more more quickly and effectively they will work with your child. A good tutor can cover many more areas in a much shorter period of time than their regular teacher.
3. Location or Site and Schedule
In the past, most tutoring was done in the home or at their school. More recently, the library has been the common choice as most have rooms that can be reserved for any legitimate purpose. Recenly, however, tutoring has become common on the internet. This is an effective and convenient use of your childs time. They are much more competent and comfortable with their computer than any age group and it seems normal to them to be taught with with what is now called "distance learning".
4. Student to Teacher Ratio
Depending on the tutor, math can be taught in small classes or in a one on one situation. Generally, your child will get more value in a one on one situation than in a small class. However, in the right situation, small classes can work well.
5. Teaching others, Practice and Testing
The tutor can teach lessons right out of your childs work by emailing or printing or writing out the problem on a whiteboard (with voice chat) that the tutor and your child share. This is a tremendous new way for students to work with tutor, especially in math where visual concepts are hard to communicate verbally. A good tutor has plenty of their own materials that can be used to suppliment your childs homework or assignments.
6. Prices
Tutors, like all of us that work, need to be paid for the service and time they spend working with your child. It is unrealistic, to expect free tutoring to be of much value, although some tutors will provide a very reasonable charge for the first hour or so, so that you can be certain of their value to you and your child. One on one tutoring, will be the most expensive but morebeneficial to your child.
You are making an investment in your childs future, so choose carefully what and who you want to tutor your child. Additionally, yur state may allow a deducation for educational expences.
