How the Head Lice Incubation Period Affects Treatments

Have you been trying to combat head lice, only to find that the pesky critters make an unwanted return into your home mere weeks later

? More often than not, it's not because your child has had interaction with a fresh source of the parasites, it's because parents don't fully understand the insect's incubation period.

Understanding the head lice incubation period along with its life cycle is crucial if you are to effectively combat an infestation in your home. The advice below will help you understand how the parasites life cycle works.

Treatment Time

1) As soon you detect any parasites in your home, you have to act immediately. Apply your chosen treatment to all the members of your household, even if some are not showing signs of an infestation yet. There is plenty of advice available online about effective home remedies for an infestation. Be sure to purchase a proper nit comb, preferably one with metal teeth.

2) Treat all of the family within a 24 hour time span. Once you have treated family members, it's time to treat the home. Although infestations don't arrive because of a dirty home, some extra care in cleaning once treatments have been applied can help prevent the parasites from returning. Look online for effective home remedies and solutions against an infestation.

Head Lice Incubation Period

Once you have applied the chosen medications and remedies to the family and the home, it's time to consider the insect incubation period. Make sure family members are made aware of how the insects move from one person to another, as well as their actual incubation period, so that they can ensure they don't pick up any fresh egg-laying adult insects from other sources.

1) Use the nit comb daily for 7 10 days following the first treatment. This will help remove any surviving insects.

2) After this period, the nits that the last infestation laid will have hatched into baby insects, known as nymphs. This is the right time to apply procedure 2 (second one above, treating the family). Follow exactly the same routine (to the letter) as you did with the first time around. Don't worry; the work and effort will be worth it.

The Results

Use the nit comb for a further three days following procedure two. As you have worked to the insect's incubation period and life span, one of three situations will occur:

Situation 1) You find adult insects in the comb after treatment two.

Result Your child is contracting fresh adult insects from an unknown source. It could be in the home, or it could be from another person.

Situation 2) You find nymphs in the comb after treatment two.

Result You have almost dealt with the infestation. Persist with the combing, until you have a clear comb (free of adults or nymphs) for three consecutive days.

Situation 3) You find no nymphs and no adults in the comb after treatment two.

Result You have effectively dealt with the infestation. Make sure your family practices a little caution to ensure head lice are kept out of your home.

Hopefully, by considering the life cycle of the parasites, you have more success in combating any infestations or outbreaks that threaten your home. Remember that it may take more than one cycle to completely eliminate the insects from your home so be diligent, patient, and smart in dealing with them.
