The word insomnia means inability to sleep, of more exactly

, when someone is not able to get the amount of sleep he needs and he wakes up tired. Different people need different amounts of sleep and that's why insomnia is defined by the quality of the sleep and how the person feel after sleeping. How many hours do you sleep is not important, if you feel tired in the morning and not able to do your obligations, you're maybe experiencing insomnia.

Insomnia is not a single sleep disorder. It's more correct to think of insomnia as a symptom of another problem. That problem could be different from person to person - could be related to something as simple as drinking too many coffees during the day, or too much stress, depression or some more complex issue like an underlying medical condition.

It's the same with the children, when it comes about them, there are many things that can cause sleeping disorders or may cause nightmares. The parents do some every day things, not being aware that they affect on their children and their sleep. Children are very sensitive and they do not feel safe if something has changed, so this could often affect on their dreams.

At first place on the list is the stress. It can be one of the primary causes for problems with sleep. Maybe it's about normal stresses, or maybe it's about something bigger like divorce of the parents, death in the family, getting a new job or start working. The parents must be aware that the children are not enough grown up to understand this things. (and go through them without any after effect)

Illness, especially fever, can be cause of nightmares.

You like to watch scary TV shows or play scary games, but be aware that your favourite police serials with plenty of gun shots and plenty of talk about bodies and blood can cause trauma and nightmares at your children.

Children that have big imagination are especially prone and the parents should know that their imaginations still keep working after they're asleep.

But there is also a solution for these sleeping problems. There are few things that you should pay attention, to diffuse childhood nightmares and insomnia.

It's very important for the children to have a regular bedtime. Waking them up, when you return home from some function, could also cause insomnia. Children may not be able to go back to sleep or it may take some time. Important to know is also that children like to sleep in their own beds, with own pillow and blanket.

If you children wake up frightened, always go straight in to them. You should not wait for them to cry it out because this will only make them more frightened and more upset. Spend some time calming your child or you could read him his favourite story.

Very useful thing is to ask your children about their dreams and it will be very interesting for them to help them inventing a happy ending. This will take their bad thoughts away.How can your child get rid of his nightmares?


You should be very careful about the TV programs that you or your children watch. It's the same with the video games.

If your child is afraid of the dark, it's recommendable to install a night light in his bedroom, for example low wattage lights that cast a reassuring glow and are pretty safe.
