How To Travel To Mellieha Malta

Assuming you have decided to spend your holiday in Mellieha, somehow you need to travel to your hotel. If this is your very first visit to Malta, then you ought to be aware of certain differences which exists between other larger European countries as regards to transport. So you have landed at the Malta International Airport which it happens to be the only airport on the island. Albeit Malta is a small island, the airport is amongst the best in Europe. Another way to make it to the island is by sea, the easiest and fastest is from Sicily with the catamaran. To start with, there are no kind of trains in Malta. So your only means of travel is by taxi, rented car, airport transfer or by bus. Furthermore, Mellieha is 24km away from the airport and there are no motorways. Starting with the easiest, at the airport you will find the major car hire operators so renting a car is quite easy indeed, driving not so much though. Malta is like the United Kingdom - we drive on the left hand side of the roads with right hand drive cars. So if you are from another country, you need to be careful until you get used to it.While driving just follow the road signs to Gozo and always drive in the main roads. Do not drive through the village cores which you will find along the way. At some point you will see road signs leading to Mellieha and just keep following them. The drive may take up more or less around 45 minutes and during a sunny day, it is quite a pleasant and scenic drive.Your next option is to take a taxi parked just outside the airport terminal. In most cases, taking a taxi can be the most expensive option even though it is the most comfortable one. Malta is no exception to this rule. Another alternative is to book a shared or private transfer at the airport. The prices are quite cheap. The worst option is to take the bus and if you are travelling with a luggage just forget it. There is a bus stop in front of the departures terminal so you need to walk it from the arrivals terminal. Just go out of the terminal and walk to the right. It is not far but pretty annoying after a long flight with your luggage! The buses are frequent (20 to 30 minutes interval between one and the other) and the airport bus takes you directly to the Valletta bus terminus. All routes, with a few exceptions, head to the Valletta bus terminus. Once arrived in Valletta, look for bus number forty three. This is the main bus leading to Mellieha. The whole trip may take not more than two hours and it can be quite a pleasant trip since the bus passes through some interesting villages. The bus service operates till 9pm in Winter and 10pm-11pm (for some routes) in Summer, so if you miss the last bus, you need to wait for the early morning bus which is at 5.00am the following day! There is no bus service at the catamaran port.Mellieha is the northern part of Malta. Getting to Mellieha for a tourist can be a challenging task. With a taxi, rented car or airport transfer service it will be the easiest way to go to your hotel. By bus it can be fun but certainly not recommended if you are travelling with a luggage. However it is the lowest cost option. Enjoy your stay!
