Popularly called the Queen of Arabian Sea, Kochi (or Cochin)

Munnar is a beautiful hill station, situated at a distance of about 130 kilometers from Kochi. Munnar was the summer resort of the British. Munnar lies at a height of about 1,500 to 2,695 meters above mean sea level. Munnar (Moonnar, literally three rivers) gets its name from the three rivers - Madupetti, Nallathanni and Periavaru that flow through the region and join some distance away from Munnar. Munnar is famous for its tea plantations and many tourists come here to see the vast tea plantations. The "Kannan Devan" brand of Tea from the Tata Group is cultivated and processed here. In fact, most of the hills here are known as Kannan Devan Hills.

Neelakurinji (Strobilanthes Kunthiana), a blue flower, which bloom only once in every 12 years is found here. It is expected to bloom in the year 2018 next. The highest peak of South India, Anamudi (2,695 m), is also in Munnar. Eravikulam National Park near Munnar is home to one of the endangered animal species of India - the Nilgiri Tahr.How To Travel From Kochi To Munnar


Travelling from Kochi to Munnar is possible only by road. There is no rail link between Kochi and Munnar. But there are many buses operating from Kochi to Munnar on a regular basis. The state owned KSRTC is one of the premier providers of bus services to Munnar from Kochi. The bus fare is between INR 100 and INR 150, depending on the type of bus. Many Private operators also provide bus service from Kochi to Munnar.

Another easy mode of travel from Kochi to Munnar is to hire a cab. Taxis might charge to the upwards of INR 2500 for a round trip to Munnar, depending on the type of car. It takes about three and half hours to reach from Kochi to Munnar by car. This mode of travel is recommended while travelling with elders and children or in a group.

The ride from Kochi to Munnar is enthralling journey in itself, through a narrow and serpentine road. Along the way, the journey takes one through natural forest with many refreshing waterfalls. One can see the tea plantations on both sides of the road and a panoramic view of the Western Ghats even before reaching Munnar. The view is extremely beautiful, particularly early in the dawn.
