, there are a few things to be aware of before you go.

They mention that travellers should take a high degree of caution due to terrorist activity and an unpredictable political environment. Australia does not have an embassy in Syria, but if you stay away from public protests and any obvious trouble, then you are likely to be just fine. It would be best to take out some travel insurance on a trip to Syria.

Since the change of leadership in 2001, the country's leader is succeeding in making Syria a modern, forward thinking and liberal country. The locals are known for their friendliness and charm. As in most countries, as long as you respect your surroundings and the people around you, you will not come to any trouble.

In regards to travelling cheaply in Syria, you will find that most things are cheap anyway. Food is cheap, souvenirs and market items will be cheap and public transport is likely to also be inexpensive.

The value of the dollar in Syria will probably good and the locals are not overwhelmingly wealthy, so life in general is not expensive.

What is expensive in Syria are the tourist haunts like hotels and restaurants. The locals are not going to these places and they hike up the prices to make the most out of visiting tourists.

Perhaps choosing a less luxurious lodging than you are used to might save you some money. Look at the local home-stay apartments or hostels as opposed to the chain hotels and boutique inns.

Syria is abundant with great food and cuisine.

There is no need to visit the restaurants to get the best food in town. Often street vendors, market stalls and small eateries are the best and cheapest way to eat your way around town. The locals eat out regularly and so there is an abundance of places to choose from and the quality is excellent.

If you travel like the locals do, then you will also be able to keep your costs down once you are in Syria. There are lots of buses to the border countries of Lebanon, Turkey, Jordan and Iraq. The demand is high so get in early. Stick to buses, trains and the odd taxi to find your way around town and you should be fine.

Much like any country in the world, if you do as the locals do, you should be able to keep the costs of your holiday as low as possible. So along with finding cheap flights online, getting your hands on some cheap travel insurance and packing light then your trip to Syria will be good value for money and an experience you will never forget.
