Although not every page of the website will be secured, make sure that the shopping cart page and any page where you are required to fill in your personal information begins with https.
When filling out forms, you may get a message on your screen asking if you want to save your information for the next time you shop. It's best to just click on NO.
Check the credibility of the merchant. There are thousands of sellers with their own websites and consumers need to be very cautious before making a purchase. Some merchants may offer incredibly low price but if you're not sure about the company's reputation, it is safer to choose a reputable merchant despite the difference in the price.
Keep in mind that a BBB logo in a website does not always mean that you are dealing with legitimate seller. Check the company's track record from the BBB (Better Business Bureau). Another way to investigate is to read reviews or comments by simply typing the name of the seller in your search bar.
Check the merchant's policy. Take the time reading and understanding the seller's policy with regards to purchases and returns. What if you find damages to the product? Does the seller offer a warranty protection? Check your options closely just in case you have complaints about the product or transaction. Submit a minimal amount of cash in your debit account. If you plan to make a purchase using your debit card, deposit only a minimal amount of cash in your account. It is not advisable to link your bank account to your debit card to help you avoid identity theft or credit card fraud.
Monitor your debit account. It's very important to check your debit account regularly especially right after making a purchase. Remember that your purchases are instantly deducted from your funds once you confirm your check out. Thus, in case you get billed incorrectly, you will need to call up the seller to ask for a refund.
A debit cardholder has only two days to report a theft. If you report within two days, you'll only be liable to pay $50. However, if you fail to inform your issuer about unauthorized charges within two days, you will be liable to pay up to $500. After 60 days, you may be forced to pay the complete charges.
Protect your computer system. Before shopping online, see to it that your computer is protected with an updated antivirus and anti-spyware software.
