What can you do to help raise this secure and powerful teenager? Here are some ideas.
You will be living with her. She may try to stand up to you and be heard, so she can learn to relate with classmates, teachers, boyfriends, future business associates. Your support for not giving up her own convictions is critical. Help your daughter make considered choices about how to express her feelings, and to whom. Even your shy daughter, you can help develop the skills to stay clear in her disagreements with those who oppose her opinion.
Having a passion for an activity she loves will give her the opportunity to master challenges, which will boost her self-esteem and give her the ability to endure and recover from a crisis or trauma in her life. You will teach her how to affirm intrinsic values rather than those of superficial appearance.
Whenever possible, let her make constructive choices about her life. Clothes is a good example. Knowing what she cares about most will come from trying some things and finding she doesn't like them..as well as finding things she does like. Perhaps your daughter might need to make a commitment to an activity but when that's over, it's okay to try something different.
