I am an out of work teacher. If you took the last word in that sentence - teacher - you could change it to most anything and it would probably be right for someone reading this article. Police officer. Computer programmer. Bus driver. Secretary. It does not matter. Right now so many people are out of work, we all need a little help.
I have not been able to find a new teaching job. In the state where I live, spending is rapidly being cut and with it go the jobs. There are more people looking and less jobs available than when I was first laid off.
My husband and I are lucky enough that we had saved money before I lost my job so we are not in the worst position. But I definitely needed to bring some money in each month to make sure we were not completely draining our savings. So I started doing online surveys.
Trust me, online surveys are not glamorous. They are often boring and tedious. You can be two thirds of the way through one and suddenly be told you no longer qualify - you will never get those fifteen minutes back and you will not get paid for them either. I would never advocate doing online surveys as a way to make a living.
But, as a way to bring in a small amount of money each month to help alleviate expenses, it seems to be doing the job well enough. If you ever find yourself interested in doing surveys for money, you need to be aware of a couple things to keep yourself safe.
Number one, never pay anyone for the privilege of doing surveys. Legitimate market research companies like MySurvey.com, MyView.com, or OnlyCashSurveys.com never ask for money from you. Instead, they are paid by the companies who provide the surveys for getting participants and collecting the data. If someone is asking you for money, be careful - they are likely a scam.
Number two, never put all your eggs in one basket. What I mean by this is, there is no reason to simply sign up with one survey company. If you do that, you will never receive enough surveys to make decent money from. Once you have identified legit companies, do not only sign up to MySurvey.com. Also sign up to IPSOS or National Consumer Panel.
Take some time and do the research to see how each individual company operates. Some reward you with gift cards instead of cash. If you do not like that, do not join that company.
Taking online surveys for money is not for everyone. Honestly, it is not really for me either. There is only so many times you can tell someone how often you use Swanson products when cooking- really, who pays attention? But in these tough times we often have to do what we have to do.
