How To Keep Your Online Business From Dying

How To Keep Your Online Business From Dying

There is a phenomenon that I have noticed among new and up-and-coming internet marketers that is quite interesting and somewhat disturbing

. Before I tell you what it is, I should probably tell you where it comes from.

Since the establishment of internet marketing, one of the largest niches of the internet marketing avenue of business has become the "make money online" niche, which we will use as an example. Horrendously over saturated, this niche is literally overflowing with new and established internet marketers looking to "teach their trade" even if they have not figured it out themselves. Literally landing page after landing page, splog after splog, and scheme after scheme have constantly forced ISP's and search engines to re-write their terms of service so as to make their environment friendly to the division of humanity that actually want to find real information. It is not uncommon for newbie internet marketers to say "I just made my first sale!" More often than not, these words follow the sale of a product that has not been verified as to quality or effectiveness.

That being said, the phenomenon I was referring to previously was the elevating of the making of profits above that of establishing a business. I will admit, making money online with a website, blog or what have you is and can be fun. However, if one wants to continually make sales and develop a business that actually grows and profits, the following things will have to be provided with absolutely no exceptions.

Stability. Whether you realize it or not, the buying, selling and trading of domain names is an enormous business. A great deal of money exchanges hands daily in this business and many fortunes have been made. Does this mean that businesses are being traded? In some cases yes, but in most cases, it is simply the domain name. Registrars list countless numbers of domain names for sale that were once registered to persons or businesses that tried to use them to make money only to give up after a short while, abandoning the effort as a fruitless one. This is where stability matters. A website must exist for enough time for it to be found. To build a customer base, you have to drive traffic, a lot of traffic, consistently. In the initial days of the internet, the old adage "if you build it, they will come" was true. Not anymore. These days everyone has a website, and what makes the difference is not whether or not you have a website, but whether or not it stands the test of time and whether or not the owning entity knows or cares enough about it to maintain it. I must admit that I have built numerous web based businesses only to watch them fail due, ultimately, to a lack of dedication to making them succeed. Many new webmasters are discouraged if the traffic and money do not immediately come rolling in and abandon their efforts soon thereafter. Stability matters, and it is what makes the difference between those who fail and those who succeed.

Originality. You must provide something original. It can be content or services. With respect to internet marketing, for example, original articles are highly valued. If the articles are duplicates of ones that have been spidered before by search engines, then they are of low value. If they are 100% original, then they are highly valued. Never underestimate the value of your perspective. You perspective is completely unique to you and only you can deliver it. Many people try to please search engines by writing content for the search engines. What is ironic is that search engines do not want articles written for search engines, they want articles and content written for humans and original articles written for humans are the type that they want to serve. Original content ranks higher than duplicate content and always will. Who is to say that duplicate content will rank at all in the future?

Quality. Lets imagine for a moment that you have launched a successful website and it is filled with original, informative and convincing content and through various methods and means you have successfully been able to drive a respectable number of unique visitors to it monthly. Imagine that as the visitors arrive to your site they find all of the original content that they can read only to find that it is really not that useful or helpful in any way. What is more, they find that it is a unique version of the same gibberish that they have been reading or running across all over the web. Do you think that they will return? Probably not. Additionally, when they see a link to your site again, odds are they will not be coming back for another visit. If this is the case, then you have lost them forever. So how is a lack of quality overcome. Simple. Research your subject. Know it. Test your theories out for yourself and then write about them. For example, if you are writing about ways to drive traffic to your website, then they should be methods you have experimented with. Remember, it is better to write from experience than to write other peoples regurgitated words because they usually stink.

Trust. If you own a website and you are trying to turn it into a business that is actually profitable, then trust is going to be the defining factor that determines whether or not a person who comes to your website will be a visitor or a customer. The interesting thing about trust is that it is the essential element of making money in any business, even more so in the online world. Trust comes over time. If there is no trust, then there is no money exchanging hands and rightly so. Money is hard to come by unless you are scamming somebody and even that is not a sustainable business model.

For a business to develop trusting customers, the aforementioned items are required. Stability. You have to be around long enough for people to find you. This usually takes years. Yes, you read that correctly. Years. Anybody who tells you different is selling a dream. Originality. The sheer level of competition on the web demands originality. Remember, you are original, but for that originality to shine through, you have to be willing to tell your own story and create your own content. Quality. Without quality, your efforts will be fruitless. Research your subject and show yourself to be a provider of quality solutions. More often than not, this takes hard work. Finally, once all these are in place, you will gain a trusting clientele. That is when you will start making real money as opposed to the pocket change you have been picking up along the way.
