How To Get Online For Less

How To Get Online For Less

Getting online is increasingly seen as an essential utility rather than a luxury

but that perception hasn't necessarily translated into the prices and deals being offered by broadband companies which are still - overwhelmingly - confusing and stuffed with extra costs.

This article aims to, in very short order, deal with three of the things that are stopping people from getting online as cheaply as possible and offers some suggestions on how to avoid them easily.

Let's go straight ahead with the first of these. The problem with most broadband deals is that they require a home phone line.

This is fine if you actually use a home phone line - as, of course, millions do - but for those trying to get online for less who don't use a home phone line because they have a mobile phone instead or, in any case, because they are simply trying to cut back on services that aren't absolutely essential.

The problem with broadband is that - for the majority of connections - it is absolutely essential. ADSL broadband - that is, an internet connection which comes down a copper phone line - requires you to have a working phone also on the line to keep it open currently which means line rental is generally a necessary evil.

There are two ways around this: either to shop around for the cheapest line rental - which in the UK means bidding good bye to BT broadband which is the largest company - or to go for cable broadband which doesn't use a copper line or mobile broadband which doesn't require a wired connection.

Cable is harder to come by, it's not available everywhere by any means, while mobile broadband tends to be slower and have small download allowance (with a few notable exceptions such as 3 Mobile Broadband 15GB).

Let's move on to the second biggest extra cost that internet users are likely to encounter.

This is the extra cost for 'set up' which is imposed by broadband providers to this day. The charge is essentially a misnomer since the vast majority of broadband connections are now hooked up by home users and no extra person is required to visit the property to set up the service.

This is therefore a true extra, excess cost imposed by those companies and should be avoided at all costs.

The best way to do this is to sign up for broadband online where this charge is waived more often than not. This is particularly true of big companies such as Sky or Virgin.

Finally, the biggest extra internet cost is overpaying for usage. If you are an infrequent internet user you do not need unlimited downloads, plain and simple, so get less and pay less.
