How To Deal With A Fearful Dog
A fearful dog is very sad, but what is even worse is the number of people who misunderstand them
. Their lack of understanding can actually make the dog more fearful. When a dog is fearful it is nearly always because their owner is not giving them enough direction. A dog wants their owner to be their 'pack leader' and offer confidence and direction. Being too kind and gentle with your dog is not really what it wants from you. This may go against your nature, but remember srength and being assertive does not mean being cruel and insensitive. It is about developing 'masculine' traits such as firmness, clarity, decisiveness and firm boundaries.It is not a dog's natural role to be the pack leader. Assuming that role can make them feel scared and under pressure, resulting in undesirable behavior as they may not be able to handle it. Any way you look at it, by assuming your place as the pack leader in the eyes of your dog you are doing both of you a favor.
To understand it from the dog's perspective, consider this scenario. You are a young child and find yourself in a dark forest with your younger sister. All of a sudden you hear the sound of a person approaching in the darkness. What would your reaction be? Obviously it would make a very great difference if one of your parents was there, as you would feel protected. You would not be the one responsible for handling the event. It is exactly the same with your dog. If your dog is made to feel responsible and in charge it will be terrified and seek safety any way it knows, which may well be in undesirable behavior such as barking or worse. It will certainly not take any notice of your commands if it feels it is responsible for protecting you.
A dog is simply not able to handle all of the many strange things that happen in the human world. There are too many decisions to make.
Everything comes back to establishing yourself as the pack leader for your dog. This is at the heart of effective dog and puppy training although like 'horse whispering' it is a concept understood by few people. It is actually rather a new approach but is proven to be highly effective. There are some video courses online which are excellent and easier to apply than by simply reading a book.
Here are some specific tips to dealing with a fearful dog:
1) Don't puch the dog too fast or hard as it may make things worse
2) Establish yourself as a pack leader (again use an online dog or puppy training course on video to help you)
3) When your friends first meet your dog, ask them first to ignore the dog. This helps establish the dog's place in the 'pecking order'.
4) Instead of approaching your dog straight away, wait until he or she is calm. Then call him/her to come to you.
5) If the dog does NOT come than it is too scared - leave it alone until it feels more confident (if it does at all).
The key to success with a fearful dog is to position yourself as the pack leader. This is your first and most important step, and without it the problem may never be overcome.
