How To Buy An IPL Machine

Buying an IPL machine used to be a somewhat simple choice. There were only 4-5 companies who sold them and you had to have medical training to use them. These days it is a whole lot more complicated due to deregulation and the plethora of new suppliers coming to market. So in this market of increased activity, new models, different specifications and price, where do you start ? Well, a good old check list is probably the best place. There are a number of issues you need to consider when venturing into this acquisition process. Here are a few considerations to take into account.

1. Do I want portable or a full salon setup ? This would largely depend on the type of business you are. If you are at all mobile, then a good portable unit should be the way to go. If you are only working from one location, then go for a more heavy duty machine.

2. What treatment ranges do I want ? This is a good question and a vital one to answer. If you are treating clients with darker skin tones, you need to bear this in mind and make sure the machines you are looking at have filters and operate in the 755-1200nm wavelength range. Most don't, so be careful that you don't spend upwards of 10,000 on a machine that won't treat your clientsHow To Buy An IPL Machine

3. How many hand pieces does it have ? If you are focused on a narrow treatment menu, then one is fine, but two is better and some come with three. Think carefully about what you want to offer. Also, if you go for a machine with 1 hand piece, but it comes with additional ones, make sure it is plug & play. That means is selects the corresponding treatment menu automatically when you plug in the hand piece or wand.

4. What is the cost of replacement hand pieces ? They do break in time and some companies charge anywhere between 700 and 1200 for replacements, which is outrageous, but they have gotten away with it for so long now. Look for suppliers who sell replacement hand pieces for 300.

5. How many shots doe the lamp have and does this cost extra ? Some companies sell you the machine, then charge you extra for the shots. This is a bit like the old photocopier scam whereby they sell you the machines and charge a cost per copy on top. Find a vendor who sells machines with lamps that last 1000,000 plus and make sure replacement lamps cost no more than 100.

6. Don't settle for old models in new boxes. Since deregulation on 1st Oct 2010 there have been many new vendors come to market with newer, better machines than those offered by the older names. These newer machines are more modern, better built, and have the very latest technologies built into them. They are powerful, long lasting and need little maintenance. How To Buy An IPL Machine

7. Maintenance contracts and extended warranties. Extended warranties often feature on consumer watchdog programs for good reason, they are expensive and most unnecessary. Some IPL vendors sell the machine at high prices, then try to convince you to pay hefty fees for maintenance. Look for vendors that offer 5 yr warranties in their price. There is simply no justification for paying 1500- 2000 per year for this. If the machine sis of good quality, ask yourself why such a high price ?

8. Price. One of the most important aspects of this acquisition. The few companies that have had it too good for too long still cling to their inflated prices, trading on their name, but this is nonsense. IPL technology is not specialist, it is more simple that building your own PC with parts from Maplins or RS. Why pay anywhere from 10-30,000 for a system when you can now buy a full professional 2 kw IPL elight system that treats all spectrums for just 2,999, and a basic system for just 1,999. Don't pay over the top, there is no need. This is common technology, despite what the sellers will tell you.

9. Training. Ok, it's true that those selling machines upward of 20,000 will offer training, but still, if you can buy a quality machine for just 1,999 and then only pay 500-1000 for quality on site training, then that has to make more sense, surely. There is a growing number of quality trainers with lots of experience springing up everywhere at the moment. Ask your vendor for details, they should have links to training providers.

So, lots to think about, and you probably have more of your own imperatives to add to the list, but one thing is constant, buying and IPL system will most probably transform your business. Good luck.
