How To Buy A Servo Motor

Servo motors has extensive use in mechanical and electrical devices

. But when it comes to buy a servo motor, it becomes difficult to make a decision because for each application required features for motor differ completely from one another. Means, if you are buying servo motors for airplane, it would not be same as buying motor for robot or toy car, which is exactly where people are likely to go wrong. You have to be extremely careful about the properties that make servomotors suitable for a certain application. Here is a list of things you need to consider:

Toque: It determines the power of the device or how much it can apply force, though technically it is the product of force and the radius at which it works. It clearly means that torque of the device has to be high for larger application and lower for small application. It can be chosen on the basis of size as well, because size of the servo motors goes up with the rate of torque.

Bearings/Brushes: For output shaft support of the servo, there are two ways, first bearing and second brushes. Though brushes are cheaper option than bearing, but bearing is durable and runs seamlessly if compared. But bearing is not the right solution for all application, especially for small and cheaper servo motors, there brushes are preferred. But for high end and large sized motors, bearing is the sole solution. Hence, choice is dependent on whether your machine is large or small.

Mass: You also need to consider the mass of servo for small mobile machines or toys so as to have easy carriage. Usually, the mass is measured in grams and mentioned over the cover pack. How To Buy A Servo Motor

Size: The size or dimension depends entirely on the type of your application. It is obvious that if you have a large machine to operate you would need a bigger motor and vice versa.

Speed: This property is measured on the basis of their swiftness to cover distance from one position to another. There are both high speed and standard servo motors which are chosen depending on the type of required speed. For instance, larger productive machineries or aircrafts need high speed servo motors.

Gears: Gears in servo motors can be of nylon or metal. Whilst nylon gears can step out or strip, metal gears cant, though they can wear out after certain period of use. For commercial airplanes and choppers, it is better to opt for metal gears, because even if they wear out, they can be replaced at cheaper price. On the other hand, nylon gears can be chosen for toy planes or sports flying.
