How To Avoid Gaining Weight in the Holiday Season - Weight Loss Advice

If there is one thing that unites us all during the holiday season festivities it is weight gain. From the first Thanksgiving dinners through to the Christmas parties, Christmas day itself and then the New Year celebrations, we are all united in overindulging to the point that weight gain becomes seemingly unavoidable. But, is it really unavoidable?

The main problem, that many people never seem to grasp, is that it is far easier to gain weight than to lose weight. With overeating and general poor diet a person can gain around 6 pounds per week in extreme cases, which can lead to a gain in weight of 20 pounds in a couple of months. To lose 20 pounds is often a much greater struggle.

Today we will talk about ways to avoid gaining weight. Prevention is always better than cure!

The first thing to learn is that weight gain is always the result of overeating. No matter how many people tell you that genetics, slow metabolism or poor diet cause weight gain, none of these are really true. Yes, they cause a person to be more inclined to eat, but it is only the eating itself that causes weight gain. So number 1 rule is - control your calories.

The easiest way to control calories is to just be very concious of how much you need and how much you are eating. The general rule for maintaining your weight is to only eat 3 meals per day, and to snack lightly on fruitin betweenmeals.

During the holiday season this rule does not work. So you have to modify your daily diet. If you are going to a party in the evening always have a smaller breakfast and a very light lunch. Then concentrate on eating healthier foods and avoiding starchy food. Bread, cookies, cakes and soda are all very bad choices. These foods are high GI, which means that most of the energy is in the form of easily digested sugar which leads to weight gain. The best way to manage weight is to follow a low GI diet plan.

Staying active during the party season is also important. If you are likely to attend many parties in the evening when you usually exercise, then you have to reorganise your exercise workouts. Do them in the mornings or at lunch time, but try not to skip too many as this is another reason why some people gain so much weight.

Do not be afraid to fast some days either. Long term fasts are not healthy, but if you have just consumed a huge meal it is perfectly healthy to not eat for 24 hours afterwards. Drink some water, or even a weight loss tea. If you do feel the need to eat something snack on some slow release carbohydrate sources such as nuts or raw fruit. This will ensure that your body continues to burn fat rather than storing fat and using the newly consumed food for energy.

It is a hard time to maintain your weight, and an even harder time to lose more weight, but it is certainly possible. With some forward planning and a bit of personal willpower you can ensure that large meals and parties do notsky-rocketyour daily calorie intake. Always compensate overeating with days of light eating and keep up with your fitness workouts.
