It is does not help to shout at your child. Both you and your child become more emotional and nothing is resolved. It is better to stay calm and keep your cool, setting a good example and staying in control.
If they shout at you, do not shout back. A shouting match will get you nowhere.
Instead, transmit a positive emotion to them when you talk, using your tone of voice and body language. Children take all this in when you talk to them not just what you are saying. Exaggerate your facial expressions and use simple words and gestures that they can relate to.
If you need to discipline your child when they have done something wrong, use a deep, firm, tone of voice, crouch down to their level, hold them by the arm and speak calmly, keeping good eye contact. Tell them what they have done wrong and what you would like them to do. They will see you mean business and understand there are boundaries which they must not cross.
Do not hold back on praising your child. Praise is a great way of positively reinforcing good behavior. You can never give your child too much of it. When you praise use a high tone of voice, showing you are happy and pleased with their behavior.
Don't give your child choices, just ask and tell them politely using 'please' and 'thank you'. Giving very young children choices does not work well as they are unable to cope with simple choices and decisions. After the age of about 5, small choices and decisions can be introduced.
Do not bargain with them to try and get them to stop behaving badly as they will try their damnedest to win. You'll find it very difficult to keep your original offer.
Always make it clear to them that it is their wrong behavior you are not happy with, not them. Do not label them or use words that may hurt.
Lastly, do not compare your child in a bad light to their siblings, friends or other children. This may have a very negative impact on them. Be aware that they may be listening when they look distracted.
