Eric Proffit, fastened chains around his arms and feet and set out on a journey that took him through two continents and over 500 miles. In an effort to bring greater awareness to human trafficking, Eric Proffitt set his everyday life and music aside to be the first man to ever Run to the Rescue of the innocent victims of human slavery. As a senior in high school, Proffitt was in Oklahoma City the day of the bombing at the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building. The images of seeing helpless children being injured and killed tore at his heart. When Proffitt learned of the child exploitation epidemic, these same feelings reemerged.
As a result, Proffitt set out to stop human trafficking through an extreme measure of his own. His plan was to raise support for organizations by putting on chains hanging from his neck, wrists and ankles as a representation of the 27 million victims enslaved in the modern day human slave trade. However, his endeavor did not end there. Eric Proffitt then ran 500 miles while wearing those chains throughout city streets and neighborhoods. He began his journey on August 1, 2009 in Washington, DC and ended in New York City, 42 days later. His modern day abolitionist efforts rallied thousands to join national campaigns and movements across the globe focused on ending human slavery.
Bikers Join Fight To Stop Child Trafficking
A groups of men and women, dressed in leather jackets chaps, gloves and boots have turned their hobby of riding motorcycles into a cause. Members of the bikers' association BACA, or Bikers Against Child Abuse, are committed to stopping abuse of children in every form. BACA members rally around abused children to provide invaluable emotional and physical support. The organization does not encourage the use of physical force or violence; however, their members are willing to act as a deterrent to abusers. Members of the organization have helped children feel less frightened by offenders in the courtroom by being present during hearings and testimony.
BACA appeared in 2009 at a local community awareness walk to offer support and attention to the cause of child sex trafficking. Instead of just walking the course to raise support for the cause, BACA members hopped on their motorcycles to make their presence known along the route. Their participation brought attention to modern day slavery and sent a bold message to those involved with this tragedy that trafficking is abuse and that BACA will not stand for it.
Trucking Industry Helping To Stop Modern Day Slavery
"Truckers" have notoriously been known for fueling the demand of sex industry by buying sexual acts from prostitutes, many of whom are children. However, not all truckers are a part of the problem. Many truckers and trucking organizations are finding ways to get involved with ending the child exploitation epidemic. Their efforts range from being trained to identify an exploited child; use of Mobile Billboards; posting a picture of a missing child on the back of their eighteen wheelers; or posting information in break rooms and truck stops. Drivers are doing what they can to help bring an end to human trafficking. Numerous drivers are willing to watch for potential victims while they are on the road, and are ready to contact authorities if they come across a potential victim. The initiative to help stop human exploitation is being supported by several state trucking groups, trucking associations, and others in the industry. Transporting victims, whether day or night; is now becoming less prevalent through the positive support of truck drivers on the road.
How You Can Help Fight Modern Day Slavery
Not everyone can go to such extreme measures in order to bring an end to modern day slavery. There are many conventional ways that you can help, like joining walk campaigns that are raising support to bring an end to the exploitation of minors in the United States and around the world. Join other individuals who are encouraging state governments to enact harsher penalties for offenders. Finally, one of the most important ways to get involved is to be aware and tell others about this horrible tragedy going on. With everyone's effort, an end to child trafficking is possible.
