How Negative Emotions Affect Weight Loss

It seems like everyone these days is trying to lose weight. We are programmed by our environment to look a certain way, dress a certain way, and even act a certain way.

Every time you pick up a magazine, turn on the TV or look around you, you are reminded of it. You begin to hate your body becoming angry, frustrated, stressed, afraid and sometimes even depressed.

If losing weight is all about eating less calories than your body needs and doing some exercise to boost your metabolism, then why are so many people still struggling to lose weight?

Losing weight has to do with your thoughts and beliefs as much as it has to do with what you eat. Let me give you an example. You are watching TV and a commercial comes on showing a chocolate cheese cake that you can make using only 3 ingredients. You weren't hungry before but now that you have seen that cheese cake you may be feeling deprived and you want to eat. Your emotions are telling you that you need to eat even though your stomach isn't telling you that you are hungry.

This is called emotional eating. It is our emotions that trigger our behaviors.

You may find that when you are feeling stressed or unhappy you have this need to eat something because it comforts you in some way. The problem is that usually it isn't something that is healthy that you grab for and once you have done this a few times it becomes an emotional anchor; so every time that you experience stress or unhappiness it triggers you to eat something.

Anchors keep you tied to beliefs that you have about your life and yourself that prevent you from moving forward. You often reward yourself with foods that prevent you from losing weight. When you're using food to reward or compensate yourself you are dealing with anchors.

Although the anchors that I am referring to around emotional eating are not healthy ones, they can also be used consciously to get a specific result.

Emotional eating doesn't happen because you are physically hungry. It happens because something triggers a desire for food. You are either subconsciously or consciously covering an underlying emotional need.

The fear of eating can take over your life. It consumes your thoughts; draining you of your energy and willpower, causing you to break down and binge. This will only create more fear and make matters worse.

So how can you overcome your fear and other emotions around eating?

In fact, you can transform all of your emotions around eating into a new healthier relationship.

The truth is, you have a spirit. All you have to do is discover it. It is that place inside of you that is always loving, forgiving and peaceful. It's a place that represents your higher self....the real you....the safe, loved and whole you. Once you discover this, the anger, frustration and stress that you are feeling around your weight will disappear.

Things never seem to happen as quickly as we would like them to...perhaps your body isn't changing as fast as you want. This may discourage you giving you further cause to indulge.

Understand that your body is a gift, and then you will start to think differently about it.

Stop dwelling on your stomach fat, your flabby arms and butt, your big thighs that you hate and all the calories that you're taking in, and see all that your body is, all that your body can do and all that your body is doing....right now.

This new awareness will create love and acceptance for your body in a way that you never had before. You begin to cherish it like the amazing gift that it is and focus on giving it health everyday....in every moment....with every breath.

In other words, start focusing on gaining health rather than on losing weight and you will be more joyful, alive and grateful. Discover the joy of living a healthy life and nourishing your spirit every day. Grow more and more in love with your body and yourself and this love will inspire and transform you from the inside out.

When you tap into something bigger than you, you have endless inspiration, which is way more powerful than any struggle of the mind or emotions. Accepting and loving your body exactly as it is right now is what sends the healing vibrations that will calm your mind and transform your body from the inside out.

When you learn to love and accept your body you are in alignment with your higher self....that loving and welcoming self.

Embrace who you are and not who you think you are or should be. Realize the efforts that you make are seeds. Don't see all of your attempts to lose weight as failures, see them as seeds you are sowing towards success.

Forgive yourself. Don't beat yourself up, no matter how many times you think you've failed, no matter what you look like right now, and no matter how many times you need that fresh start. Forgive yourself!
