How FL Governor's Race and Health Insurance Plan Reform Are Intertwined

In recent memory, the state of Florida has always been a major political battleground

. The size of its population and its reputation as a "swing state" give it paramount importance. Therefore, even statewide races are watched nationwide.

The race for Florida governor has been cutthroat for months. Most of that has come via a brusing Republican primary battle. While Democrat (and the state's Chief Financial Officer) Alex Sink sailed through with only token opposition, Bill McCollum and Rick Scott were throwing blows at each other on television.

In a turn of developments that was shocking to some, Scott was victorious. He was successful in portraying McCollum as a political insider beholden to the party establishment. McCollum, on the other hand, tried to convince voters that Scott was corrupt.

Both primary candidates largely ran on their opposition to healthcare reform. As attorney general, McCollum spearheaded the multi-state lawsuit that seeks to overturn the individual mandate provision. According to McCollum and the other AGs involved, requiring people to either buy a health insurance plan or pay a fine is unconstitutional. How FL Governor's Race and Health Insurance Plan Reform Are Intertwined

While conservatives cheered that turn of events, it was not enough to keep McCollum in the race. Scott also promoted his anti-"Obamacare" bonafides, spending $50 million of his own money on advertising. He was one of the founders of the Columbia Hospital Corporation/HCA, which grew into one of the nation's largest health care providers. Although Scott claims that this experience indicates that he has the ability to provide free market solutions to the health care crisis, it also opens him up for criticism.

While Scott was chief executive officer, the firm was accused of Medicare fraud and paid a nearly $2 billion settlement. Granted, Scott himself was never charged. However, his involvement creates suspicion that he either condoned the behavior or was unable to control his subordinates. Neither option puts him in the best light for political office. Many Democrats would claim that such actions further emphasize the neccessity of health insurance plan reform. Sink will surely run with that belief during her general campaign.
