How Divorcing Couples Deal with Children

Divorce is the final option for couples that, for one reason or another, can no longer make their marriage work. These days, it is considered foolish to marry without a prenuptial agreement, which assures the couple that if in the future their marriage shouldn't work out, they can end it with a modicum of civility, because arrangements have already been made. But prenups usually only take into account the couple's finances, properties, and other assets. It rarely takes into the children the couple may have in the course of their married life. Which leads to one of the biggest problems for a divorcing couple: child custody.

Who gets the children? How do you work out visitation rights? Divorces can be messy, drawn-out affairs, and it's usually the children who suffer the most. They may feel caught in the middle, or forced to choose between their mother and father. Some children may even feel like they are to blame, that they somehow caused their parents to fight or break up. The psychological trauma may take years to heal, so it is very important for divorcing couples to remember that their children's well being must always be placed before their own. Kids need to be reassured that it is not their fault and that their parents still love them, even though they can no longer be together. Children are resilient, and smarter and more perceptive than they seem. As long as both parents provide emotional support for their kids, they can avoid the trauma and confusion that comes with being caught in the middle of a divorce. Always remember to put the child's interest above your own although your marriage may be over, your obligation to your child remains and must be prioritized above all else.
