How Can Ringworm Treatments Help?

Ringworm, also known as tinea or dermatophytosis

, is a cutaneous fungal infection. It is characterized by a dry and scaly patch with red border. This can cause you embarrassment and in some cases it can cause discomfort because ringworm can also be manifested by itchiness and inflammation. Proper treatment of ringworm is necessary to eliminate the disturbing symptoms it brings. Ringworm treatment will help you eradicate the fungi. Most of them are fungicides that kill the fungi effectively.

What are the different types of ringworm treatment?

Ringworm treatment has two different types: Topical treatment and Systemic treatment. Topical treatment is used for external application of the medicine directly over the ringworm patch. They are usually used for ringworms on the foot (tinea pedis) and ringworms on the groin (tinea cruris). While systemic treatment is used for severe forms of ringworms. Cases like ringworms on the scalp (tinea capitis) and ringworms on the fingers (tinea unguium) are treated with systemic therapy.

What are the different forms for each treatment?

Topical treatments are available in creams and lotion, and systemic treatments are available in the form of pills or oral medications. Topical treatments are usually bought without prescription but systemic medications usually need prescription.

What medications are available in the market?

Topical treatments include Miconazole (Desenex, Micatin, Daktarin, Decocort, and Monistat-Derm), Clotrimazole (Mycelex and Lotrimin), Ketoconazole (Extina, Nizoral, Nizoral A-D, Xolegel, and Ketoderm), Terbinafine (Lamisil AT, Lamisil, and Lamisil Dermgel), and Clotrimazole and Betamethasone (Lotrisone) which is indicated for ringworm accompanied by itchiness and inflammation. When using lotrisone, it is important to follow the manufacturer's instruction, or you may consult your doctor for guidelines in its proper use and application.

Systemic treatments include Griseofulvin (Grifulvin V, Gris-PEG, Fulvicin P/G, and Griseofulicin), Itraconazole (Sporanox and Sporanox PulsePak), Terbinafine (Lamisil), and Fluconazole (Diflucan).

How these treatments are properly administered?

Topical treatments are applied directly over the ringworm and its surrounding. You should apply the cream or lotion for about 4 to 6 centimeters over the ringworm including the normal skin around the ringworm. This will prevent fungal infection to the surrounding normal skin. Topical treatment should be applied twice a day for three weeks.

Systemic treatments are usually taken once a day for seven consecutive days. But you should ask your doctor so that an effective treatment regimen will be prescribed to you.

How to prevent ringworm from coming back?

Ringworms can affect anyone. Here are some important tips that you should remember to prevent fungal reinfection:

Avoid sharing personal things such as towels and slippers.

Use slippers or footwear when going to public showers.

Do not wear tight or fit clothes.

Always keep yourself free from sweat. If you are active and always sweating, make sure you change your clothing with a clean and dry one.

Observe proper hygiene especially when you get in contact with other people.

Refrain from getting close to ringworm infected persons and animals.
