How A Student Driver Affects Your Car Insurance

Do in North Carolina or Florida? Do you have a teenager or young driver about to start driving in your household? It will affect your policy. Your auto insurance rates typically will increase when a teen driver is added to your policy. There are many factors that will affect how much adding a student driver to your insurance policy will increase the premiums, but expect the cost to rise on average by about 100 to 200 percent.

Of course, this is because accident rates are much higher for all drivers under age 25, especially young, single males. That being said, the best thing your young driver can do is to take a driver education class in school, keep good grades, maintain a good driving record for a couple of years, and use the car sparingly. How A Student Driver Affects Your Car Insurance

But there are things you (and the young driver) can do to minimize the impact.

New Driver Discounts Vary By State

Discounts may be available in the state where you live. To qualify for some of these discounts, you will have to submit proof of eligibility. Also, all driving history will be verified when you submit an application for insurance. We can tailor discounts to fit your exact circumstances.

Here are some examples of state discounts:

- Good Student Discount Applies to drivers under 25 who are full-time students in high school, college or university, and who are scholastically ranked high in their class. Recent graduates under age 25 may qualify if they had a scholastic record meeting these requirements. Home-schooled students also may qualify if they satisfy these requirements.

- Good Driver Discount -- Applies if every driver on the policy has had no moving violations and no at-fault accidents during the past three years.

- Multiple Automobiles Discount Applies if you have two or more passenger cars insured on the same policy, the vehicle owners live in the same household, and they are related by blood, marriage, or adoption.

- Accident-Free Discount If your car has gone three years or more without a chargeable accident during this period, you may receive a discount on the premiums for Bodily Injury and Property Damage Liability, Personal Injury Protection, and Collision Coverages. The discount may increase over time if the policy remains in force and there are no chargeable accidents. (An accident is chargeable if the driver was at least 50% at fault and the insurance company paid at least $750 for combined property damage and collision damage. In a multiple vehicle accident, a property damage claim must have been paid.)

- Defensive Driving Course Discount -- Applies if the principal operator of the vehicle is at least 55 years of age and has voluntarily taken and successfully completed a state-approved Motor Vehicle Accident Prevention Course within three years.

- Anti-Lock Brake Discount -- Vehicles equipped with a factory installed anti-lock braking system. How A Student Driver Affects Your Car Insurance

- Anti-Theft Device Discount Vehicles equipped with a qualifying anti-theft device or vehicle recovery system.

- Airbag Discount -- Vehicles equipped with a factory-installed air bag may receive a discount on the premium for Medical Payments Coverage.

-Vehicle Safety Discount certain 1994 and newer model year private passenger vehicles may receive a discount on the premium for Personal Injury Protection based on the loss experience of that particular vehicle.

Being a young new driver is hard enough and with that new freedom comes rules. The best things you can do to keep your auto insurance down is to take a driver education class in school, keep good grades, maintain a good driving record.
