Al-Balad the gem in the eye of Holiday Inn Jeddah
We are uniquely positioned close to both the Central Business District (CBD) and one of Jeddah's most popular tourist attractions the gleaming white Medina Gate. In the 16th century, this proud city was under the rule of the Turkish Ottoman Empire, its massive walls pierced by six staunch gates and watchtowers. Sadly, all that remains is this one gate, the rest having been largely torn down in the post-war era. However, the Old Town of Al-Balad is still largely intact, and only a few minutes' walk from our hotel.
As Jeddah's business district expanded, Al-Balad was in danger of being torn down in favour of high-rises. Although a lot of damage was done, it was rescued from further development in the 1990s. In 2007 the Jeddah Urban Development Company was founded to restore the Al-Balad district and convert it to a heritage area of historic buildings and traditional craft centres. Heavy investment means repair works are already well underway, and the hope is to create a cultural and heritage area the equal of El-Khalili in Cairo, and to achieve inclusion on the UN's World Heritage list.
To achieve Heritage Status the city needs local as well as global cooperation something which has already been partially achieved, with both international and local companies working together on the restoration of 30 buildings. Souks and shopping centres
As it stands, Al Balad and its environs are fast becoming a centre for commerce and tourism. The glittering modern skyscrapers house a number of large Saudi companies among them the headquarters of the National Commercial Bank. The upscale shopping malls are home to numerous high-end European designer stores, while in the ancient souks and alleyways local traders ply their wares.
We at Holiday Inn Jeddah recommend you leave your designer shopping for another day, and visit the bustling souks of Gabil, Alawiyyin and Al-Badawi, to see how little life has really changed since the days of the Six Watchtowers and the Ottoman Empire.
