Holiday Inn Hull

Hull, or to give it its full name, Kingston-upon-Hull, is a large town in the East Riding of Yorkshire, dating from the 12th century. Once an important centre of whaling and fishing, today Hull thrives as a passenger and cargo port, redeveloping its docklands for leisure and commerce. We at Holiday Inn Hull are an important part of this, providing quality meeting rooms and accommodation in the city's attractive Marina district.

Hull as a heritage port

Named Kings town upon Hull by Edward I in 1299, Hull sits on the banks of the Hull River and, until the county was abolished, was the county town of Humberside. An important trading and military supply port, it was also a whaling port in the 18th and 19th century. In the marina district near us at Holiday Inn, Hull's whaling and trawling heritage is remembered in the old warehouses, drying sheds and industrial buildings. These have been tastefully renovated, finding new life as chic bars, restaurants, retail units and offices.Holiday Inn Hull

The city was an important military stronghold during the Civil War. Later, it was the birthplace of William Wilberforce, the slave trade abolitionist one of a number of famous residents. Others include flight pioneer Amy Johnson, poet Philip Larkin and a number of actors - John Alderton Tom Courtenay, Ian Carmichael and Maureen Lipman were all born and raised here, and the city has several fine theatres and concert halls.

Hull is an attractive old town with many fine Georgian and Victorian buildings. Sadly, its rich docklands and industrial heritage made it a major target in the Second World War, and it suffered devastating damage during the Blitz. Much of the city was rebuilt after the war, but it fell into decline with the collapse of the fishing industry. However, recent years have seen an extensive program of urban renewal, with economic growth in several exciting new areas notably tourism and the leisure industry. Relics remain, however. In 2006, worrying evidence was unearthed that suggested an unexploded wartime bomb may be located under the aptly-named retail and leisure development, The Boom.

The city is unusual in having cream-coloured, rather than red telephone boxes. This is because it is Britain's only city with its own independent telephone system - Kingston Communications (now KC), established in 1902. The KC Stadium is home to Hull Town football and rugby clubs, and a popular venue for corporate entertainment.

Hull in the 21st century

We at Holiday Inn Hull are situated in one of the city's most popular districts, Hull marina. Developed in 1983 on the site of the old Humber Dock area, it provides berths for sailing and leisure craft, with Hull hosting the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race in 2010. It's also the site for jazz, folk and literature festivals.

The city's Old Town and Museum Quarter have a large number of heritage buildings and museums, while Princes Quay is just one of a number of exciting new retail and leisure developments. The dynamic transport hub of Paragon Interchange has brought further opportunities.

We at Holiday Inn Hull offer a high degree of excellence to both business and leisure visitors, with first-class meeting rooms and accommodation in an attractive and central location.
