Once an ancient port, the present city plan dates from 1942, when the municipality of Al Khobar was founded following the arrival of oil. The largest employer is the oil giant Saudi Aramco. The nearby town of Damman houses SA's second largest port, which is another major employer. Al Khobar has 3 main commercial areas: Khobar, Subekha and Thuqba. The third district, Aqrabia, is mainly residential. The spectacular 16 mile King Fahd Causeway, linking Khobar to the island country and international airport of Bahrain, is close by. It was built following the wise decision to relocate the major flow of industrial shipping to nearby Damman and Ras Tanura, the dedicated port for Saudi Aramco. Though Al Khobar harbour still handles passenger and cargo traffic, it has allowed the city to recreate itself as a centre for tourism and light commerce.
