The Grand Palace (Phra Borom Maha Ratcha Wang) is one tourist attraction which is very much worth a look. The building complex is made up of several temples, residences and other structures and building began in 1782 during the reign of king Rama I when he decided to move the capital of Thailand from Thonburi to Bangkok. One part of the Palace which you should make sure you see if you go there is the Temple of the Emerald Buddha and its associated museum. The temple was designed as a personal chapel for the royal family and houses a huge image of Buddha which is carved from a single piece of jasper. In the museum, you'll see various artefacts associated with the emerald Buddha and the grand palace.
Another temple which you may like to see is Wat Arun or The Temple of Dawn'. It lies on the east bank of the Chaophrayan river and predates Bangkok being the country's capital. It is at its most spectacular when viewed in the early morning sunlight when the sun reflects back from the river, so if you can manage a very early start, book a river trip to see it at its very best.
Of course isn't just about temples there is much much more here to see and do, and the brave tourist will step off the beaten track a little and investigate some of the hidden treasures that can be found in this interesting city. If you're not sure what you'll find by doing this, or where to do this, you could try the New Road area. The New Road itself is a well known thoroughfare which many visitors go to, but the maze of narrow streets that weave across it are a great place to explore. You'll find lots of interesting things here from food stalls selling local cuisine, to bric-a-brac shops and gold shops. There are also a number of smaller local bars which few tourists normally find, but where you're likely to be made most welcome if you stop for a drink.
