Holiday In Xiamen, A Destination Like No Other
Xiamen is a thriving city located on the southeastern coast of China
. Xiamen and its environs are well known as being the ancestral home of many of the Chinese Diaspora. The city has been a flourishing seaport for many centuries and in the 1800s was Chinas principal port for exporting tea. It was also the first port of trade in China to be used by Europeans. A well established commercial centre, Xiamen is the worlds largest manufacturer of sunglasses. Xiamen was recently voted Chinas cleanest city.Xiamen offers many delights for the holidaymaker. The city and its environs provide picturesque scenery and tranquil unspoiled beaches. Gulangyu, also called Piano Island is a popular attraction for tourists. Offering spectacular views of the city and many examples of European Victorian style architecture, the island seems almost Mediterranean in its ambience. After you wander through the islands quaint winding paths, take the opportunity to climb up Sunlight Rock, the islands highest point and admire the view of the exotic 19th century buildings.
Not to be missed is Xiamens Botanical Garden, a nature aficionados delight with a vast variety of flora including a redwood tree gifted by Richard Nixon, the former US President.
Major sites of historical interest include the Nanputuo Buddhist Temple, which dates back to the Tang Dynasty and is considered to be a national treasure. The Huxian Temple is another point of interest. The imposing Overseas China Museum is also well worth a visit.
Every year in October the Xiamen Rock Music Festival is held. It is conducted on the beach with participating bands from all over China, Taiwan, South Korea and Hong Kong, an enthralling experience for the visitor.
For the shopping enthusiast Xiamen offers an array of department stores, international supermarkets and the well known ShoeMart Shopping mall. Zhongshan Lu is the principal shopping avenue in Xiamen, with local shophouses as well as the latest clothing, shoes and other products. The newly established Xiahe Lu area is another shopping hotspot.
