Holiday Compensation: How To Get It For Your Goldtrail Package Holiday.
You have packed your bags. You have the passports. You have the booking confirmation, and the taxi is outside your house. You can barely contain your excitement as you pull up to the departure terminal. But, your flight is cancelled. Your holiday provider has gone bust and you feel like you have been hit by a bus.
This is a common story for those who have booked holidays with the Surrey-based company Goldtrail. Goldtrail went into administration at 4pm on the 16th of July, leaving an untold number of passengers stranded either abroad or without any holidays at all.
The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) estimates that approximately 16,000 people are stuck in Greece and Turkey with a further 2,000 due to fly out imminently. A CAA spokesman has confirmed that there are approximately 150,000 Goldtrail passengers, but it is not clear how many of these are actually going to be effected.
What is clear, is the failure of Goldtrail does seem to have come out of nowhere. Customers have remarked that they were able to complete online check in and alter baggage arrangements only to arrive at the airport three hours later to see their flight cancelled.
For those that are lucky enough to afford rebooking their flights, they may be able to proceed with their holiday. But even this could possibly mean losing days from your holiday. For those that arent so fortunate, they end up losing the money spent on their accommodation completely.
One passenger, Martin Plimmer said
Our predicament was however that if we couldnt afford the flights we would lose the 1,500 that we paid for our all-inclusive hotel because it was through a different company.
The CAA has warned that the travel industry is in for a bit of a turbulent ride, as the combination of an economic downturn and difficulties in the airline industry will really squeeze small operators.

Goldtrail Travel Ltd actually has an ATOL license. As a result, passengers will be able to claim holiday compensation from the CAA, of which ATOL is a part of. However, it is not that easy.
First you would have to fill in a claim form, which cannot be submitted electronically. If you booked through a travel agent then they will have to complete certain sections of the form as well. Once the form has been sent in and all the documentation has been received by the CAA, it could take up to two years for your holiday claim to be processed.
This is of course only for products that are covered by the ATOL license such as flights.
If you purchased non-air holiday arrangements from Goldtrail such as accommodation packages, you are not covered by ATOL. If this is the case then you would need to contact your credit card or debit card issuer about receiving compensation.
If you paid any cash directly to Goldtrail, then under the Consumer Credit Act, you are entitled to claim that money back from your credit or debit card provider.
Typically travel insurance does not cover the collapse of holiday companies, so you would not be able to claim from them.
