Holiday Christmas Parties: Should You Take a Significant Other to the Party at Work

?

An article appeared on the BBC World News website this past week that discussed whether it's wise to take a significant other to a work holiday season party or to go on your own and leave your partner or spouse at home.

The article brings into focus the deep divide in many people's minds between work and the rest of their life.

The writer points out that many have had bad experiences while allowing their significant other to accompany them to the office, shop, or factory party. They ended up deeply embarrassed by the individual's behavior, perhaps as they drank too much or made inappropriate comments.Holiday Christmas Parties: Should You Take a Significant Other to the Party at Work?

Some are of the opinion that it's better to go to holiday parties just with the rest of the staff and not with a guest. But as the article points out, not everyone sees it this way. You can find the articlehere.

What's so revealing about this article is howinauthentic human beings tend to be. Many of us really do wear masks much of the time, which is a reflection of our highly unconscious lifestyles.

It's not a matter of whether we do or don't take a guest with us that's the issue in this blog. What we're focusing on is the deepdivide in people's lives.

An individual can be an entirely different person in their work environment than they are once they close the office, factory, or shop door behind them. They may be highly functional in their work, yet their personal life may be a disaster. It's almost as if they were two people.

But for the conscious person, there is less and less a divide. All the spokes of our wheel connect to the hub of consciousness.

This is the very definition of what it is to be aspiritual person: that our life reflects wholeness, in that we are present inevery aspect of our day.

If we wouldn't take our significant other to the holiday party, assuming the protocol allows us to do so, then what in us needs their inappropriate behavior in certain aspects of our life?

In the world's state of unconsciousness, so many lives have no integrity to them. There's no sense of wholeness, of everything fitting together in a harmonious manner.

When we become conscious, we gradually shift from a life in chaos to a life that's integrated in every aspect. We begin livingresponsibly.

As Eckhart Tolle puts it inStillness speaks:

What Buddhists have always known, physicists now confirm: there are no isolated things or events. Underneath the surface appearance, all things are interconnected, are part of the totality of the cosmos that has brought about the form that this moment takes.

What's really happening when our life is fragmented is that we aren't living fully in the present moment. We are, at least in parts of our life, avoiding the responsibility the present calls for.

As Eckhart says:

Ultimately you are not taking responsibility for life until you take responsibility for this momentNow. This is because Now is the only place where life can be found.

Whatever our specific choices in situations such as holiday parties at work, consciousness invites us to live more deeply fulfilling lives by becoming a person who is whole, our life integrated in each and every moment.
