Specifically, developing an opt-in list requires you to secure the permission of your email client to send them information of interest. This information may take the form of a process or procedure, a catalog or other promotional information or it may in the form of a newsletter. Regardless of the format used you must offer some useful information of relevance to the reader.

Due to the amount of spam that permeates email marketing, "no one" is likely to invite you send them email unless they believe that will receive something of real value in return. Therefore, your first task is to develop promotional material that has real value to your reader; and then offer to forward this information for free to the prospect, in order secure the reader's permission to send emails in the future. Building an opt-in list takes a measure of time and effort, but the rewards are enormous. You can read articles all the time about how easy it is to build an opt-in list. The truth is, that it takes time and effort. In the end, however, because your list will be gathered from inquiring parties who have indicated a true interest in your offering, you now have a target market which makes all of your effort worthwhile.

The first thing you need to do in the process of building your opt-in list is to get your auto- responder set up so that you will be able to respond immediately to any inquiries to your site. This in reality is a two fold process requiring you to: first, develop a set of twelve to fifteen auto-responder messages that are intended to encourage your prospect to explore further into your product offering; and second, to actually purchase and install the auto-responder which you will use to send your messages to the prospective customer.

Once you have the auto-responder ready to be implemented, you will need to put a sign up button at bottom of your web page or blog which links to your auto-responder. With this in place, once someone clicks on your sign up button your auto-responder will be kicked into action to make sure that your responses go out in a timely fashion. Additionally, with your range of auto-responder messages you will have a number of messages that will continue to be sent (increasing your chances of winning over the customer in the end). The third step in this process is to put your ezines and articles to ezine and article directories. This, of course, assumes that you already have ezines and articles in place. If you do not, then you need to take steps to correct that "missing link" in your chain.

If, by chance you do not have the time, inclination or ability to write your own articles, then, the next best thing is to selectively pick up articles off the Internet which you can use on your site for free. You will, of course, have to the author credit and make sure that you have permission to use the article. If you are truly selective in choosing articles for your site, you can still gain respect for your reader base.
