Helping To Identify Behavior Problems In A Child

Self esteem issues are one of the root causes for behavioral problems in children

. In most cases, treating this cause has been found to show remarkable results. All you have to do is see the signs objectively and make a decision to take steps to set the situation right. The longer self esteem issues continue, the greater the chances of them turning into permanent behavior problems.

Here are some signs of low self esteem in a child. In some cases it might help to bring it to the attention of a school teacher, child care professional or a person trained to help with behavior problems. In other cases, all it requires is doing small things to boost the child's confidence.

*One of the best ways to spot a child with low self esteem is to look at how he behaves and interacts when he is in the company of other children. If he is outgoing, engages in group activities and is eager to participate then you do not have to worry. However if he is aloof and shows reduced responsiveness or none at all, then it is a thing of worry. Child behavior is something that even an untrained individual can observe to a great degree of accuracy. This is because children are less likely to mask their behavior as compared to adults. Therefore, it is also easier to treat low self esteem in children.

*The child will also have difficulty in self expression and hesitate to engage in activities where he either has to perform or to engage in some creative activity at a public forum. The reason behind this is the belief that the child might think that his work is not good enough. While both parents and teachers play in important role in reinforcing confidence in children, the influence of the peers is an important consideration. If positive behavior of the child is encouraged by all these three groups, then it is likely to become naturalized. However if the child is thrown into the spotlight unwillingly then there are chances of him becoming more shy and reticient. That is why this needs to be done very carefully and gradually.Helping To Identify Behavior Problems In A Child

*The duration for which the child shows signs of a behavioral problem is important. Usually it happens very gradually but if parents or care takers examine the case history of the child, they might find a certain incident or exposure to certain stimuli that would have triggered the change in the child. It is important to identify this to resolve the problem. Also, while enforcing child discipline, forcing him or her to do things might work temporarily. It is not a permanent solution.

*A well known philosopher Tristan Tzara once said that thought starts in the mouth. And so it does. Therefore if you want to improve your child's self esteem and encourage him to think positively then teach him to talk positively about himself. By making positive statements about his abilities and the tasks he performs, he is more likely to keep anxiety and worry at bay. Setting an example for him and talking positively about you will also help him adopt this skill easily.

It is advisable for parents to know the signs of low self esteem and take the right measures to reverse the problem as soon as possible.
