Help your child find the right student accommodation

So the moment has come and they're about to fly the nest and go to university

. Exciting times. As parents you're bound to want to help your child make the right choice about which type of student accommodation will suit them best when they arrive in their new city to study.

When it comes to student accommodation you and your child have very different priorities. You're concerns are financial plus finding them a place to live where they can study and get good grades. They're concerns are, how shall we put it, a little more "social". Well they are maturing adolescents after all.

Choosing student accommodation can be tough without any local knowledge. Don't leave things to the last minute. Take a trip to the city where your child is going to study and have a good look around and get a feel for the place. Planning ahead also helps you avoid the last minute rush to find somewhere to live. In many cities there is barely enough student housing to go around.

Halls of residence are a great option for first year students. They provide a great opportunity to meet other students and are usually handily placed near the university. Choose a hall for a great mix of studying and socialising.

Beyond the first year, students will generally want to strike out on their own. A shared house offers a little bit more independence. Most cities have a student area near the university that has over time become dominated by rented housing aimed at second and third year students. So even if your child wants to leave the security of campus, they can move to an area surrounded by other students and packed with facilities and services that are student centric. With the added bonus of student friendly prices.

The final option for student accommodation is city centre properties. These may be a little too close to all the parties and clubs for some parents sensibilities!
